Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
Mood Boosting Probiotic contains 10 active ingredients — a mix of beneficial bacteria species and a prebiotic ingredient. The bacterial strains include L. acidophilus, L. rhamnosus, L. plantarum, B. longum, B. lactis, B. infantis, B. animalis, L. brevis, and L. helveticus.
Galactooligosaccharides is a prebiotic (food for the beneficial bacteria). There's one inactive ingredient, methylcellulose, which is a binder that helps hold the capsule together.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence on these ingredients is mixed and mostly not yet established. L. acidophilus is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome, H. pylori, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis.
For the other bacterial strains in this product — B. longum and L. helveticus — the facts we hold show insufficient evidence to rate effectiveness for the conditions they've been studied in, including cognitive decline, hay fever, anxiety, depression, and respiratory infections. The data doesn't support claims about mood specifically for any ingredient here.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L. acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children, though some people report mild gastrointestinal side effects like bloating, flatulence, and diarrhea — these are uncommon. B. longum is generally well tolerated in healthy people but warrants caution in those who are seriously ill or immune-compromised; rare cases of serious bacterial infection have occurred in critically ill infants and preterm infants.
L. helveticus is generally well tolerated in healthy people, with similar caution needed if you're seriously ill or immunocompromised. Several ingredients — L. rhamnosus, L. plantarum, B. lactis, Galactooligosaccharides, B. infantis, B. animalis, and L. brevis — have no safety data on file with us.
Pregnancy and lactation safety data aren't available for most ingredients; only B. longum is rated possibly safe during pregnancy and lactation.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
The main concern here is antibiotic drugs. L. acidophilus, B. longum, and L. helveticus can all lose effectiveness if you take antibiotics at the same time, so you'll need to separate them by a few hours.
Several other ingredients in this blend we couldn't check for interactions. Before you take this product, look up any antibiotics you're on with the medication search tool below.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This probiotic is generally well tolerated in healthy people, but it's not a proven mood booster based on the evidence we hold. If you take antibiotics, you'll need to space them out from this product.
If you're seriously ill, immune-compromised, pregnant, or breastfeeding, talk with your doctor before starting. Run your current medications through the checker on this page to be sure.
