NiaCel 400 contains two active ingredients: nicotinamide riboside hydrogen malate and betaine anhydrous. Nicotinamide riboside is a form of vitamin B3 that your cells convert into NAD, a molecule involved in energy production and cellular repair.
Betaine is an amino acid compound that supports methylation reactions in your body — processes that affect everything from heart health to liver function. The capsule also contains inactive ingredients (hypromellose, calcium laurate, microcrystalline cellulose, and silicon dioxide) that help deliver the actives.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
The evidence for nicotinamide riboside in this product is still developing. We don't have reliable data to rate it for age-related macular degeneration, Alzheimer's disease, athletic performance, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, or heart failure.
Betaine anhydrous is effective for homocystinuria (a rare genetic disorder affecting amino acid metabolism) and possibly effective for high homocysteine levels. For other uses like nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, depression, or acid reflux, the evidence is insufficient to rate.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Nicotinamide riboside is generally well tolerated in short-term studies, but we don't know its long-term safety profile yet. The most common side effects are bloating, muscle pain, nausea, itching, sweating, and changes in bowel habits.
One patient reported leg cramps. The data advises against use in pregnancy and while breastfeeding.
Betaine anhydrous is generally well tolerated at studied doses, though it can cause body odor, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and gastrointestinal upset. A rare serious effect (cerebral swelling) has been reported.
