Organic Chlorella Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Herbadiet
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Organic Chlorella against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Herbadiet Organic Chlorella is a single-ingredient supplement: organic chlorella powder, a freshwater algae. That's it — there are no other active ingredients or fillers listed.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Chlorella shows possibly effective evidence for pregnancy-related iron deficiency. For brain tumor, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), depression, and fatigue, the evidence is insufficient to rate — meaning we don't have enough reliable data in our database to say whether it works for those uses.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chlorella is generally well tolerated in the short term, though product quality and purity vary widely. Common side effects include allergic reactions, abdominal cramping, constipation, diarrhea, fatigue, gas, nausea, sun sensitivity (photosensitivity), and changes in stool color — especially during the first two weeks.
Rare serious reactions include anaphylaxis and asthma. Because long-term safety data is limited, the safety facts note that chlorella should not be used unless your doctor approves it.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take warfarin (Coumadin) or any blood thinner, check with your doctor or pharmacist first — chlorella's vitamin K may reduce how well the drug works. Also double-check if you're on any photosensitizing medications (drugs that increase your skin's sun sensitivity), as chlorella may add to that effect.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Chlorella may be worth considering if you're pregnant and iron-deficient, though the evidence is still developing. If you take warfarin or medications that increase sun sensitivity, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting it — interactions are documented.
Given the variability in product quality and the lack of long-term safety data, it's best to discuss chlorella with your own healthcare provider before you begin.

HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Herbadiet Organic Chlorella can interact with medications, chiefly through its vitamin K content and potential photosensitizing effects.
The most serious documented concern is with warfarin (Coumadin), a blood thinner: chlorella's vitamin K may reduce warfarin's effectiveness, and at least one case report shows warfarin becoming sub-therapeutic after someone started chlorella supplements.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Chlorella may also have additive photosensitizing effects with certain medications that increase sun sensitivity — meaning it could theoretically increase the risk of sun-related skin reactions when combined with those drugs.
Altogether, these interactions span 337 individual medications. If you take warfarin or any photosensitizing drug, check your exact medications with the search tool on this page before adding chlorella to your routine.

Photosensitizing Drugs
Theoretically, chlorella might have additive effects with photosensitizing drugs.
Chlorella has been reported to cause photosensitization. In five case reports, patients who had ingested chlorella exhibited swelling followed by erythematopurpuric lesions on sun-exposed areas of the body. Theoretically, concomitant use with photosensitizing drugs may exacerbate effects.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theoretically, chlorella might reduce the clinical effects of warfarin.
Chlorella contains significant amounts of vitamin K. There is at least one case report of warfarin therapy becoming sub-therapeutic after initiation of chlorella supplements.
