HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Organic Bone Broth Collagen from Beef by Dr. Mercola
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product has two active ingredients: sodium and collagen. The sodium comes from the bone broth itself — it's not added separately, but it's present in meaningful amounts.
Collagen is the main structural protein in bones and connective tissue; when you consume it, your body can use those amino acids for joint, skin, and gut support. The product also contains several inactive ingredients (fillers and binders) including tapioca dextrose, gum acacia, tapioca maltodextrin, sunflower lecithin, palm oil, and guar gum.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
Our data shows sodium is likely effective for cystic fibrosis and possibly effective for amphotericin B nephrotoxicity (kidney damage from an antifungal drug). For bipolar disorder and congestive heart failure, the evidence in our files isn't strong enough to rate it one way or the other.
We don't hold effectiveness data on collagen or beef bone broth concentrate for any health claim.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Sodium is generally well tolerated in normal dietary amounts — up to the recommended daily limit of 2.3 grams. The real concern is too much.
Excess sodium is linked to high blood pressure, heart strain, and kidney disease. Serious side effects from high intake are rare but include worsened cardiovascular and kidney disease.
There's also research suggesting high sodium intake is tied to gastric cancer risk in population studies. For pregnancy and lactation, sodium is likely safe, though one entry in our data rates it possibly unsafe — the evidence on file is mixed.
Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this product's sodium content is okay for you if you're pregnant or nursing. We don't have safety data on file for collagen or beef bone broth concentrate.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check your exact medications if you take lithium (major risk of toxicity from sodium shifts), antihypertensive drugs for blood pressure, corticosteroids, didanosine, sodium phosphate laxatives, tolvaptan, or any other sodium-containing medications — all have moderate interactions with the sodium in this product.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you take lithium, blood pressure medications, corticosteroids, didanosine, or sodium-containing drugs, check with your pharmacist before starting — the sodium in this product could affect how those work. If you're healthy with no medication concerns, normal amounts of sodium from bone broth are fine, but don't use this as a sodium supplement.
Talk to your doctor if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, or kidney problems.

Organic Bone Broth Collagen from Beef by Dr. Mercola Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Dr.
Mercola's Organic Bone Broth Collagen from Beef contains sodium, which does interact with several medication types. The most serious concern is with lithium — high sodium intake can lower lithium blood levels and reduce its effect, while cutting sodium can raise levels and cause toxicity.
If you take lithium, you'll need to keep your sodium intake steady and consistent.

Sodium also has moderate interactions with blood pressure medications (antihypertensive drugs), corticosteroids, didanosine (an HIV medication), sodium phosphate laxatives, tolvaptan, and other sodium-containing drugs. With blood pressure medications, too much sodium can work against them and make it harder to control your pressure.
With corticosteroids, extra sodium raises the risk of high blood sodium (hypernatremia). With the others, the main concern is also hypernatremia — sodium buildup in your blood.
We could not check collagen or beef bone broth concentrate for interactions; they either aren't in our database or are ingredient blends we'd need to break down further. Altogether, these interactions span 203 individual medications.

For each ingredient in Organic Bone Broth Collagen from Beef with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Sodium
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, a high intake of dietary sodium might reduce the effectiveness of antihypertensive drugs.
High intake of dietary sodium can increase systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Also, high intake of sodium may necessitate increased use of antihypertensive medications to achieve blood pressure control in some patients, such as those with chronic kidney disease.
Corticosteroids
Concomitant use of mineralocorticoids and some glucocorticoids with sodium supplements might increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Mineralocorticoids and some glucocorticoids (corticosteroids) cause sodium retention. This effect is dose-related and depends on mineralocorticoid potency. It is most common with hydrocortisone, cortisone, and fludrocortisone, followed by prednisone and prednisolone.
Didanosine (Videx)
Concomitant use of didanosine with additional sodium from dietary or supplemental sources may increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Didanosine formulations contain a significant amount of sodium.
Lithium
Altering dietary intake of sodium might alter the levels and clinical effects of lithium.
High sodium intake can reduce plasma concentrations of lithium by increasing lithium excretion. Reducing sodium intake can significantly increase plasma concentrations of lithium and cause lithium toxicity in patients being treated with lithium carbonate. Stabilizing sodium intake is shown to reduce the percentage of patients with lithium level fluctuations above 0.8 mEq/L. Patients taking lithium should avoid significant alterations in their dietary intake of sodium.
Sodium Phosphates
Theoretically, concomitant use of sodium phosphate with sodium supplements might increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Use of high doses (> 45 mL in 24 hours) of sodium phosphate, such as those used for bowel cleansing before surgery, can lead to serious electrolyte disturbances, including hypernatremia. The risk of hypernatremia is highest in the elderly and people with other risk factors for electrolyte disturbances.
Sodium-Containing Drugs
Concomitant use of sodium-containing drugs with additional sodium from dietary or supplemental sources may increase the risk of hypernatremia and long-term sodium-related complications.
The Chronic Disease Risk Reduction (CDRR) intake level of 2.3 grams of sodium daily indicates the intake at which it is believed that chronic disease risk increases for the apparently healthy population. Some medications contain high quantities of sodium. When used in conjunction with sodium supplements or high-sodium diets, the CDRR may be exceeded. Additionally, concomitant use may increase the risk for hypernatremia; this risk is highest in the elderly and people with other risk factors for electrolyte disturbances.
Tolvaptan (Samsca)
Theoretically, concomitant use of tolvaptan with sodium might increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Tolvaptan is a vasopressin receptor 2 antagonist that is used to increase sodium levels in patients with hyponatremia. Patients taking tolvaptan should use caution with the use of sodium salts such as sodium chloride.
