Organically Bound Minerals Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Organically Bound Minerals against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Low disclosure
This product contains 3 active ingredients. Iodine supports thyroid function and is used to address iodine deficiency and protect against radiation exposure.
Organic alfalfa juice powder is a plant-derived ingredient with a long food history. Organic kelp is included in a proprietary blend alongside the other active ingredients.
The tablet also contains inactive ingredients — organic honey, organic rice extract, organic rice, organic Arabic gum, and organic sunflower oil — that serve as binders, fillers, and carriers to hold the formula together.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Iodine is rated Likely Effective for preventing iodine deficiency and protecting the thyroid after radiation exposure. It's also rated Possibly Effective for oral mucositis (mouth sores) and periodontitis (gum disease).
For alfalfa juice powder, the evidence we hold is insufficient to rate its effectiveness for diabetes, indigestion, high cholesterol, or menopausal symptoms. Organic kelp's effectiveness data isn't on file with us.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Iodine is well tolerated at normal dietary levels, but high doses can cause thyroid problems. The most common side effects from oral iodine are abdominal upset, nausea, diarrhea, metallic taste, headache, and increased salivation.
Rare serious reactions include hypersensitivity reactions such as anaphylaxis. Chronic or very high-dose use has been reported to cause acneform skin lesions called iododerma.
Alfalfa is generally well tolerated in small food amounts, but supplement doses carry different safety considerations. The most common side effects are abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, and gas.
A rare serious effect is a lupus-like syndrome after long-term ingestion. Because alfalfa has estrogen-like activity, the safety data advises against supplement doses during pregnancy, and there isn't enough data to know if it's safe at supplement doses while breastfeeding — talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized guidance.
Iodine use in pregnancy requires adequate amounts but should follow your doctor's dosing recommendations to avoid high-dose intake; some iodine passes into breast milk, so medical guidance is important there too.
Meds to double-check
Major interaction found
Check your medications before taking this product if you use warfarin (Coumadin) — a blood thinner where alfalfa may reduce effectiveness and raise clot risk. Also double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take lithium, antithyroid drugs, amiodarone (heart rhythm medication), photosensitizing drugs (medications that increase sun sensitivity), birth control pills, hormone replacement therapy, immunosuppressants, or diabetes medications.
No interactions are documented for organic kelp, as we could not check that ingredient.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with strong clinical evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Major medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product is appropriate for supporting iodine intake if you don't take warfarin, lithium, antithyroid drugs, amiodarone, photosensitizing medications, birth control pills, hormone therapy, immunosuppressants, or diabetes medications. If you take any prescription drug, search your exact medications with the tool on this page before you start.

Organically Bound Minerals by SP Standard Process Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Organically Bound Minerals by SP Standard Process contains iodine and organic alfalfa juice powder, both of which interact with medications.
The most serious concern is alfalfa's Major-severity interaction with warfarin (Coumadin), a blood thinner — alfalfa's vitamin K content can reduce warfarin's anticoagulant effect, potentially raising clot risk. You'll want to check this before using the product if you take warfarin.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Iodine raises Moderate-severity concerns with lithium (used for mood disorders), antithyroid drugs, and amiodarone (Cordarone, a heart rhythm medication). Lithium and iodine together may worsen thyroid suppression; iodine can alter how antithyroid drugs work; and amiodarone already carries high iodine that could become excessive if combined with this product.
Thyroid function monitoring becomes important with any of these.
Alfalfa also carries Moderate-severity interactions with photosensitizing drugs (medications that increase sun sensitivity), birth control pills, hormone replacement therapy, immunosuppressants, and diabetes medications. It may increase sun sensitivity, interfere with contraceptive or hormone therapy efficacy, reduce immunosuppressant effectiveness, or lower blood sugar.
Organic kelp in this product was not checked — we hold no interaction data for it. Altogether, these interactions span 589 individual medications.

organic Alfalfa juice powder
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theoretically, alfalfa might reduce the anticoagulant activity of warfarin.
Alfalfa contains a large amount of vitamin K. This could theoretically interfere with the activity of warfarin.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, alfalfa might increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
Animal research suggests that alfalfa decreases blood sugar in diabetic mice. Also, in one case report, a diabetic patient experienced hypoglycemia after consuming alfalfa extract. Monitor blood glucose levels closely. Dose adjustments might be necessary.
Contraceptive Drugs
Theoretically, alfalfa might interfere with the activity of contraceptive drugs.
Alfalfa contains coumestrol, a phytoestrogen, and isoflavonoids, which have estrogenic effects.
Estrogens
Theoretically, alfalfa might interfere with hormone therapy.
Alfalfa contains coumestrol, a phytoestrogen, and isoflavonoids, which have estrogenic effects.
Immunosuppressants
Theoretically, alfalfa might decrease the efficacy of immunosuppressive therapy.
In vitro research and human case reports suggest that alfalfa may have immunostimulant effects.
Photosensitizing Drugs
Theoretically, concomitant use of alfalfa with photosensitizing drugs might have additive effects.
Animal research suggests that excessive doses of alfalfa may increase photosensitivity, possibly due to its chlorophyll content. It is unclear if this effect would be clinically relevant in humans.
Iodine
Amiodarone (Cordarone)
Combining iodine with amiodarone might cause excessively high iodine levels.
Amiodarone contains 37.3% iodine and can increase iodine levels. Concomitant use with iodine might increase the risk of having excessive iodine levels and adversely affecting thyroid function. Monitor thyroid function.
Antithyroid Drugs
Iodine might alter the effects of antithyroid drugs.
Iodine in high doses has been reported to cause both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, depending on the individual's past medical history. Taking iodine while using antithyroid drugs could alter the effects of the antithyroid drugs.
Lithium
Combining iodine with lithium might have additive hypothyroid effects.
Lithium can inhibit thyroid function. Several case reports suggest that concomitant use of lithium and potassium iodide can reduce thyroid function in otherwise healthy adults. Monitor thyroid function.
