What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Pau d'Arco against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Full disclosure
This liquid contains one active ingredient: pau d'arco inner bark extract from the Handroanthus impetiginosus tree. The other ingredients are inactive carriers — distilled water, certified organic cane alcohol, and certified organic vegetable glycerin — that help deliver the extract.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence isn't established for the uses pau d'arco is commonly marketed for. The data we hold shows insufficient reliable evidence for cancer, peptic ulcers, wound healing, and dysmenorrhea — meaning there isn't enough solid research to know whether it works for these purposes.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Pau d'arco is generally well tolerated at typical doses, but human safety data is limited. At higher doses — especially when the lapachol compound exceeds 1.5 grams daily — it may cause anemia, increased bleeding risk, severe nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
Occupational exposure to pau d'arco sawdust can trigger asthma and severe skin rashes, though oral use at normal doses doesn't typically cause this. The product should be avoided during pregnancy — the safety data advises against it due to possible harm to a developing baby.
There isn't enough information to know whether it's safe while breastfeeding, so talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist if you're nursing or planning to nurse.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs are the main concern here — Moderate severity. If you take any anticoagulant or antiplatelet medication (prescription or over-the-counter), clear this product with your doctor or pharmacist first, because pau d'arco may increase your bleeding risk.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Pau d'Arco may be worth considering if you're exploring traditional remedies, but the evidence for its claimed benefits isn't established in the data we hold. The real caution is if you take blood thinners or antiplatelet medications — this product could raise your bleeding risk.
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding it to your routine, especially if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or on any medications.
