Pro-Bio Beads Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Solgar
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Pro-Bio Beads against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Pro-Bio Beads by Solgar
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
Pro-Bio Beads contains four active probiotic ingredients: Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium longum, and a proprietary blend labeled as Acidophilus. These are live beneficial bacteria meant to support digestive and intestinal health.
The inactive ingredients include coconut oil, palm kernel oil, gelatin, vegetable glycerin, soy lecithin, and pectin — these serve as the delivery system and binders for the beads.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Lactobacillus acidophilus is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome, Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis. For Bifidobacterium longum, the evidence we hold shows insufficient data to rate it for the conditions studied — including antibiotic-associated diarrhea, allergic rhinitis, anxiety, and asthma.
We don't have effectiveness ratings for the other two ingredients.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lactobacillus acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children, though you should check with your doctor before use. Gastrointestinal side effects like bloating, gas, abdominal pain, and diarrhea are uncommon but possible, especially when combined with other probiotics.
Rare serious infections (bacteremia, sepsis, abscesses) have been reported, typically in patients whose bacteria may have traveled from other parts of the body — most concerns apply to people who are critically ill or severely immune-compromised. Bifidobacterium longum is generally well tolerated in healthy people but warrants caution in those who are seriously ill or have weakened immunity.
Rare gastrointestinal side effects include abdominal discomfort, gas, constipation, and one reported case of dry cough. Limited safety data exist, so talk with your doctor before use, especially while breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Separate antibiotic drugs from this product by a few hours — antibiotics can kill the live bacteria in these beads and make them less effective. Check with your doctor or pharmacist about the right timing for your specific antibiotic.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product may help with irritable bowel syndrome, certain infections, and antibiotic-associated diarrhea if L. acidophilus is the active ingredient at work. The main thing to watch is timing: don't take it at the same time as antibiotics — ask your doctor or pharmacist when to take each.
If you're critically ill, have a weakened immune system, or are pregnant or breastfeeding, discuss this product with your healthcare provider first before starting.

Pro-Bio Beads by Solgar Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Pro-Bio Beads by Solgar contains probiotics (Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium longum) that interact with antibiotic drugs.
Both species can be killed by antibiotics, which would reduce the probiotic's effectiveness — so timing between the two matters.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The concern is straightforward: these probiotics are live, active organisms. When you take an antibiotic at the same time, the antibiotic may kill off a significant portion of the beneficial bacteria in the supplement.
To avoid this, separate your antibiotic dose from your probiotic dose — your doctor or pharmacist can recommend the right timing for your specific antibiotic.
We could not check two of the four ingredients — Lactobacillus plantarum and Bifidobacterium animalis lactis — so interactions for those are unknown to us. Use the medication checker below to search your exact prescriptions against this product.

Lactobacillus acidophilus
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
Bifidobacterium longum
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium longum with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. longum.
Since B. longum preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. longum preparations by at least 2 hours.
