Bifidobacterium breve is generally well tolerated in healthy infants, but caution is advised if your baby is very ill or immunocompromised. Probiotics are often considered low-risk, but evidence is limited — use only under your doctor's guidance.

Rare cases of Bifidobacterium bacteremia (bacteria in the bloodstream) have been reported in critically ill infants and preterm infants taking probiotics, including B. breve. In one hospital review of 298 neonatal patients who received B. breve over five years, bacteremia occurred in six (2%).

Bloating and flatulence have been reported with probiotic use generally, though not specifically linked to B. breve. The safety data for the other four ingredients in this product aren't on file.

Antibiotic Drugs

Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
