Cefiderocol Sulfate Tosylate falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Bifidobacterium Breve interacts with.

Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium breve with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. breve.
Since B. breve preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. breve preparations by at least 2 hours.

Here's the simple version: cefiderocol (Fetroja) is an antibiotic, and its whole job is to kill bacteria. The catch is that it can't tell the difference between the bad bacteria causing your infection and the friendly Bifidobacterium breve in your probiotic. So if you take them close together, the antibiotic may wipe out a good chunk of those live probiotic organisms, leaving you with less benefit from the supplement. This doesn't make the cefiderocol less effective, it just means your probiotic may not do much.

One thing to keep in mind: cefiderocol is given as an infusion in the hospital, so this is more of a theoretical concern. If you do use a probiotic, ask your care team about timing and whether it's even appropriate for you right now.

What Is Cefiderocol Injection Used For?

Brand name: Fetroja

Fetroja (cefiderocol) is approved for adults 18 and older to treat two types of serious infections caused by susceptible gram-negative bacteria. The first is complicated urinary tract infections (cUTIs), including kidney infections (pyelonephritis), caused by organisms such as E. coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus mirabilis, and Enterobacter cloacae complex.

The second is hospital-acquired bacterial pneumonia (HABP) and ventilator-associated bacterial pneumonia (VABP), caused by gram-negative bacteria including Acinetobacter baumannii complex, E. coli, Enterobacter cloacae complex, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Serratia marcescens. Fetroja should only be used when a bacterial infection is confirmed or strongly suspected, to help prevent antibiotic resistance.
