Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 4 of its 4 active ingredients.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

Probiotic 5M contains four active ingredients. Biotin is a B vitamin that supports skin and nail health.

The product also includes two live probiotic bacteria — Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum — which work in your gut to support digestive and immune function. Apple Pectin, a soluble fiber from apples, rounds out the blend.

The powder form also contains several inactive ingredients including mannitol, silicon dioxide, calcium carbonate, and digestive enzymes (bromelain, papain, lipase, amylase, and protease), along with sweeteners and gums.

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports this product's ingredients for its stated purpose, but it isn't conclusive.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: Digestive health and gut balance.
  • We looked for evidence on: Antibiotic-associated diarrhea, Bacterial vaginosis, Clostridioides difficile infection, Colic, Constipation, Diarrhea — and 4 related terms.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Lactobacillus Acidophilus is rated "Possibly Effective" for Antibiotic-associated diarrhea (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Lactobacillus Acidophilus is rated "Possibly Effective" for Bacterial vaginosis, Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
  • Also on file: Bifidobacterium Bifidum is rated "Possibly Effective" for Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

For biotin, the evidence shows it's likely effective for biotin deficiency — the most straightforward use. For other conditions like multiple sclerosis or seborrheic dermatitis, the data suggests it's possibly ineffective, and for hair loss (alopecia areata), there isn't enough reliable evidence to rate it.

The two probiotic bacteria — Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum — are possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome and possibly effective for supporting recovery from antibiotic-related diarrhea. L. acidophilus may also help with bacterial vaginosis and H. pylori, while B. bifidum shows some evidence for respiratory tract infections.

Apple Pectin is possibly effective for high cholesterol but the evidence for blood sugar control is insufficient. Overall, this is a gut-health–focused product, not a treatment for disease.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 4 of the 4 matched ingredients.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 4 of 4.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 4 of 4.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Biotin is generally well tolerated, even at higher doses, because your body excretes excess in urine. High-dose biotin has rarely caused mild diarrhea, and one isolated case report linked high-dose biotin with chest inflammation, though it's unclear what caused it.

The two probiotic bacteria are generally well tolerated in healthy people, though those with weakened immune systems should check with their doctor first. Gastrointestinal side effects like gas, bloating, and mild stomach discomfort can occur when taking probiotics, but these are uncommon.

Apple Pectin is generally well tolerated from food and typical amounts, though diarrhea, gas, and mild cramping are possible. Rarely, people sensitive to pectin may have allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis.

For pregnancy, biotin is likely safe at normal amounts. Both Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum are possibly safe in pregnancy, though safety data are limited.

Apple Pectin is likely safe in normal food amounts but possibly safe in concentrated supplement form during pregnancy — talk to your doctor about high-dose use. Breastfeeding safety data for pectin supplements specifically are limited.

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 3 of the 4 matched ingredients can interact with medications — Pectin, Lactobacillus Acidophilus, Bifidobacterium Bifidum.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: heart-rhythm medications.
  • For scale: 188 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Check your medications against these drug types before starting: first, any heart rhythm medication like digoxin (Lanoxin), because Apple Pectin can reduce its absorption by a significant amount (Moderate severity); second, tetracycline antibiotics and any other antibiotic drugs, which can interact with both the pectin and the live probiotic bacteria (Moderate severity); and third, lovastatin (Mevacor) or other cholesterol medications, where pectin may reduce effectiveness (Moderate severity).

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

This product is designed for families wanting to support digestive health with probiotics and biotin. If you take heart medications, antibiotics, or cholesterol drugs, you must check your exact medications before starting, because Apple Pectin can interfere with absorption.

If you're taking antibiotics, time your doses several hours apart from this product so the live bacteria aren't killed. Talk to your pharmacist before use if you have a weakened immune system or are pregnant.

Digoxin (Lanoxin)

Theoretically, pectin might reduce the absorption of digoxin, potentially decreasing its effectiveness.
A small clinical study shows that taking digoxin with a kaolin-pectin suspension reduces the absorption of digoxin by about 62%. It is unclear if these effects are due to pectin, kaolin, or the combination.

Likelihood Possible Evidence B
Lovastatin (Mevacor)

Theoretically, pectin might reduce the absorption of lovastatin, potentially decreasing its effectiveness.
Case reports suggest that concomitant use of pectin and lovastatin might reduce the cholesterol-lowering effect of lovastatin, possibly due to reduced intestinal absorption of lovastatin.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Tetracycline Antibiotics

Theoretically, pectin might reduce the absorption of tetracycline antibiotics, potentially decreasing their effectiveness.
A small clinical study shows that taking tetracycline with bismuth subsalicylate in a kaolin-pectin suspension reduces the absorption of tetracycline by about 34%. It is unclear if these effects are due to pectin, kaolin, bismuth subsalicylate, or the combination.

Probiotic 5M by KiddieMax: Common Questions

Does Probiotic 5M by KiddieMax interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Probiotic 5M has a known interaction with 188 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Probiotic 5M contains 4 active ingredients, and an interaction can come from any of them. We check every ingredient, combine the results into one list per medication, and show which ingredient and mechanism is responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Is this safe for my child?
Probiotic 5M is a powder designed for kids. The probiotics and biotin are generally well tolerated in children. However, you may notice mild gas, bloating, or loose stools when starting — these are usually uncommon but can happen. If your child has a weakened immune system or is on antibiotics, talk to your pediatrician or pharmacist first.
Can I take this while my child is on antibiotics?
The probiotics in this product are live bacteria, and antibiotics will kill them. If possible, separate doses by at least a few hours — take the antibiotic at one time of day and the probiotic at another. Your pharmacist can help you time the doses to protect the probiotics.
What does biotin do in this product?
Biotin is a B vitamin that supports healthy skin, hair, and nails. This product uses it as a supplement to dietary biotin. The evidence shows it's likely effective for actual biotin deficiency, though for other conditions like hair loss the evidence is weaker.
Will this help with my child's digestive problems?
The two probiotic strains — Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum — are possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome and for diarrhea caused by antibiotics. These probiotics work by supporting healthy gut bacteria, but results vary by person. Talk to your pediatrician about whether probiotics are right for your child's specific situation.
Are there any serious side effects I should watch for?
Most people tolerate this product well. The most common side effects are mild gas, bloating, or loose stools, especially when starting. Serious allergic reactions to pectin are very rare. If your child develops a rash, itching, or any signs of an allergic reaction, stop and contact your doctor right away.
Is it safe to give this to my pregnant or breastfeeding child?
This product is designed for children, not pregnant or breastfeeding individuals — if you're asking about yourself, talk to your doctor. Biotin is likely safe in pregnancy at normal amounts. The probiotic bacteria are possibly safe but data are limited, and pectin safety in concentrated supplements during pregnancy hasn't been well studied.
