Probiotic Acidophilus Beads Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Probiotic Acidophilus Beads against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Probiotic Acidophilus Beads by Sundown Naturals
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This product contains 4 active ingredients: two Bifidobacterium species (Bifidobacterium animalis lactis and Bifidobacterium longum), two Lactobacillus species (Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus plantarum), plus a proprietary blend called Probio-Guard that contains additional acidophilus. These are live probiotic bacteria meant to support gut health.
The inactive ingredients include coconut and palm kernel oils, gelatin, vegetable glycerine, soy lecithin, and pectin — these are the capsule and binding materials that hold the product together.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for these probiotics is mixed and depends on what you're using them for. Lactobacillus acidophilus shows possibly effective evidence for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis.
However, for the other conditions in our data — including age-related cognitive decline, hay fever, anxiety, asthma, and athletic performance — the evidence is insufficient to rate these probiotics. If you're considering this product for a specific health goal, ask your pharmacist what the evidence actually supports.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Both Bifidobacterium longum and Lactobacillus acidophilus are generally well tolerated in healthy people and children, though caution is needed if you're seriously ill or have a weakened immune system. Rare gastrointestinal side effects have been reported, including abdominal discomfort, flatulence, bloating, diarrhea, and constipation.
Rarely, one person reported a dry cough. There is a small risk of infection (bacteremia or sepsis) in critically ill patients or preterm infants, so this product isn't appropriate for everyone — check with your doctor if you're in a high-risk group.
For pregnancy and lactation, Lactobacillus acidophilus is rated possibly safe, and Bifidobacterium longum is also rated possibly safe, but the data are limited — talk with your doctor before using while pregnant or breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking Probiotic Acidophilus Beads, double-check any antibiotic drugs you're taking or may start soon — both Bifidobacterium longum and Lactobacillus acidophilus can be killed off by antibiotics taken at the same time, reducing the probiotics' effectiveness. Your pharmacist can help you schedule doses so they don't interfere with each other.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product may help if you're dealing with IBS, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, or certain bacterial infections, but the evidence is strongest for those specific uses. Timing with antibiotics is critical — you'll want to space them apart so the live cultures aren't killed.
If you're immunocompromised, critically ill, or in the first weeks of life, this product isn't safe without your doctor's go-ahead. Check your medications with your pharmacist or doctor before you start, especially if you take antibiotics.

Probiotic Acidophilus Beads by Sundown Naturals Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Probiotic Acidophilus Beads by Sundown Naturals contains Bifidobacterium longum and Lactobacillus acidophilus, both of which interact with antibiotic drugs.
The most serious concern is Moderate severity: taking these probiotics at the same time as antibiotics might reduce how well the probiotics work, because antibiotics can kill the live organisms in the preparation. Since these are live cultures, timing matters.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Both Bifidobacterium longum and Lactobacillus acidophilus are affected by the same drug type. The recommendation is to separate when you take antibiotics from when you take this product — ask your doctor or pharmacist for the right spacing so the probiotics aren't killed off.
Altogether, these interactions span 182 individual medications.
Two other ingredients in this product — Bifidobacterium animalis lactis and Lactobacillus plantarum — we could not check for interactions. Before you start, use the medication checker on this page to look up your exact prescriptions, especially any antibiotics you're currently taking or may take soon.

Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
