L. acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. B. longum is generally well tolerated in healthy people, but caution is needed if you're seriously ill or immune-compromised.

Both ingredients have rare reports of gastrointestinal side effects — abdominal discomfort, flatulence, bloating, and constipation with B. longum; epigastric discomfort, abdominal pain, and diarrhea with L. acidophilus. There are rare but serious case reports of bacteremia (bacteria in the bloodstream) and sepsis in critically ill infants and severely immune-compromised patients.

For pregnancy, B. longum is rated possibly safe. L. acidophilus is possibly safe in pregnancy, though lactation data aren't on file for it.

Antibiotic Drugs

Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
