Probiotic Blend Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Probiotic Blend against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Probiotic Blend by pHion Balance
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
pHion Balance Probiotic Blend has 10 active ingredients: five probiotic bacteria (Bifidobacterium bifidum, Lactobacillus fermentum, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus salivarius, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, and Bifidobacterium longum), plus sodium, inulin fiber, and FOS. These are meant to support gut health by adding beneficial bacteria and feeding them with fiber.
The inactive ingredients — microcrystalline cellulose, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, pectin, sodium carbonate, silica dioxide, stearic acid, guar gum, and turmeric — are fillers, binders, and capsule materials that help form and preserve the tablet.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Evidence for these probiotics is mixed. Lactobacillus acidophilus is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis — but possibly ineffective for atopic disease (eczema, allergies, asthma).
Bifidobacterium bifidum is possibly effective for IBS and respiratory tract infections. Bifidobacterium longum hasn't shown reliable evidence for the conditions studied so far.
Inulin fiber is possibly effective for obesity, constipation, and diabetes. The data we hold don't include enough evidence to rate effectiveness for many other uses these probiotics are marketed for.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
The probiotics themselves are generally well tolerated in healthy people. However, those with weakened immune systems should be cautious — there are rare reports of serious infections from probiotic bacteria in critically ill patients.
Inulin fiber and the probiotics often cause bloating, flatulence, and gastrointestinal discomfort, especially when first starting or at higher doses. Sodium is essential in small amounts, but too much is linked to high blood pressure, heart strain, and kidney problems.
The product's sodium content plus your dietary sodium could add up quickly. Pregnancy and lactation data are limited for most ingredients — the data on file suggest sodium is possibly unsafe in pregnancy, while the probiotics and inulin are possibly safe, but you should discuss this product with your doctor or pharmacist if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product if you use blood pressure medications (antihypertensives), corticosteroids, lithium, diabetes medications, antibiotics, or any sodium-containing drug — these have Moderate or Minor interactions with ingredients in this blend. Antibiotics are especially important: if you need them while taking this probiotic, space the doses several hours apart.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This blend may help with IBS, digestive issues, or general gut health in otherwise healthy adults, though the evidence is strongest for a few specific conditions. If you take blood pressure medications, lithium, diabetes drugs, antibiotics, or corticosteroids, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting — sodium and the probiotics both raise concerns with these drugs.
Those who are seriously ill or have weakened immunity should also talk it over first. Use the interaction checker on this page for your exact medications.

Probiotic Blend by pHion Balance Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
pHion Balance Probiotic Blend contains sodium, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Lactobacillus acidophilus, inulin fiber, and Bifidobacterium longum — ingredients with documented interactions.
The most serious concern is sodium's Moderate interaction with blood pressure medications (antihypertensives): high sodium intake can reduce how well these drugs work, potentially requiring higher doses to control blood pressure.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The probiotic organisms — B. bifidum, L. acidophilus, and B. longum — all interact Moderately with antibiotics. Since these probiotics contain live, active organisms, taking antibiotics at the same time may kill a significant number of them and reduce the probiotics' effectiveness.
Inulin fiber has a Minor interaction with diabetes medications, theoretically increasing the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).
Sodium also interacts Moderately with corticosteroids (raising sodium levels in your blood), lithium (altering its blood concentrations and potentially causing toxicity), didanosine (an HIV medication), sodium phosphate (used for bowel prep), tolvaptan (for low sodium levels), and other sodium-containing drugs — all carrying risks of dangerously high sodium levels.
We could not check Lactobacillus fermentum, Lactobacillus salivarius, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, or FOS for interactions — no data is on file for these ingredients. Altogether, these interactions span 473 individual medications.

For each ingredient in Probiotic Blend with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Sodium
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, a high intake of dietary sodium might reduce the effectiveness of antihypertensive drugs.
High intake of dietary sodium can increase systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Also, high intake of sodium may necessitate increased use of antihypertensive medications to achieve blood pressure control in some patients, such as those with chronic kidney disease.
Corticosteroids
Concomitant use of mineralocorticoids and some glucocorticoids with sodium supplements might increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Mineralocorticoids and some glucocorticoids (corticosteroids) cause sodium retention. This effect is dose-related and depends on mineralocorticoid potency. It is most common with hydrocortisone, cortisone, and fludrocortisone, followed by prednisone and prednisolone.
Didanosine (Videx)
Concomitant use of didanosine with additional sodium from dietary or supplemental sources may increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Didanosine formulations contain a significant amount of sodium.
Lithium
Altering dietary intake of sodium might alter the levels and clinical effects of lithium.
High sodium intake can reduce plasma concentrations of lithium by increasing lithium excretion. Reducing sodium intake can significantly increase plasma concentrations of lithium and cause lithium toxicity in patients being treated with lithium carbonate. Stabilizing sodium intake is shown to reduce the percentage of patients with lithium level fluctuations above 0.8 mEq/L. Patients taking lithium should avoid significant alterations in their dietary intake of sodium.
Sodium Phosphates
Theoretically, concomitant use of sodium phosphate with sodium supplements might increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Use of high doses (> 45 mL in 24 hours) of sodium phosphate, such as those used for bowel cleansing before surgery, can lead to serious electrolyte disturbances, including hypernatremia. The risk of hypernatremia is highest in the elderly and people with other risk factors for electrolyte disturbances.
Sodium-Containing Drugs
Concomitant use of sodium-containing drugs with additional sodium from dietary or supplemental sources may increase the risk of hypernatremia and long-term sodium-related complications.
The Chronic Disease Risk Reduction (CDRR) intake level of 2.3 grams of sodium daily indicates the intake at which it is believed that chronic disease risk increases for the apparently healthy population. Some medications contain high quantities of sodium. When used in conjunction with sodium supplements or high-sodium diets, the CDRR may be exceeded. Additionally, concomitant use may increase the risk for hypernatremia; this risk is highest in the elderly and people with other risk factors for electrolyte disturbances.
Tolvaptan (Samsca)
Theoretically, concomitant use of tolvaptan with sodium might increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Tolvaptan is a vasopressin receptor 2 antagonist that is used to increase sodium levels in patients with hyponatremia. Patients taking tolvaptan should use caution with the use of sodium salts such as sodium chloride.
Probiotic Live cells
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
Inulin Fiber
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, inulin might increase the risk of hypoglycemia with antidiabetes drugs.
Some clinical research shows that inulin improves glycemic control in patients with diabetes; however, it is unclear if it has hypoglycemic effects.
