Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
ProBiotic Eight 65 contains eight active probiotic strains — live bacteria and fungi designed to support your gut health. Four of them are Lactobacillus species (salivarius, plantarum, acidophilus, and casei), three are Bifidobacterium species (breve, longum, and animalis lactis), and one is Lactobacillus rhamnosus.
The capsule also includes inactive ingredients: microcrystalline cellulose, hypromellose, fructooligosaccharides, silica, and magnesium stearate.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for these strains varies. Lactobacillus acidophilus is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome, Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis.
The other checked ingredients — Bifidobacterium breve, Bifidobacterium longum, and Lactobacillus acidophilus for other conditions — either have insufficient evidence or are possibly ineffective. We don't have effectiveness data on file for Lactobacillus salivarius, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, or Bifidobacterium animalis lactis.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
The three strains we could check are generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. However, caution is advised if you're seriously ill or have a weakened immune system — rare cases of bloodstream infections caused by these bacteria have been reported in critically ill infants and adults.
Gastrointestinal side effects like bloating, flatulence, abdominal discomfort, and diarrhea have been reported with probiotic use, though they're uncommon. Data on safety during pregnancy and breastfeeding are limited for most of these ingredients; Bifidobacterium longum is rated possibly safe during pregnancy and lactation, but for the others we don't have enough information to say either way.
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before use, especially if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a serious illness.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take antibiotic drugs, you must separate them from this probiotic — take them several hours apart, since antibiotics can kill the live organisms and make the supplement ineffective. We could not check five of the eight ingredients for other medication interactions.
Use the checker on this page to search for your exact medications before you start.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This eight-strain probiotic may help with certain gut conditions if Lactobacillus acidophilus is the active ingredient doing the work — and we simply don't know about the others. The main thing to watch is antibiotics: they'll kill the live cultures, so you'll need to time your doses carefully.
If you're healthy and not on antibiotics, it's generally well tolerated; if you're very ill or immunocompromised, check with your doctor first.
