Probiotics Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by NutriClean
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Probiotics against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Probiotics by NutriClean
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
NutriClean Probiotics contains 11 active ingredients: six species of beneficial bacteria (Bifidobacterium infantis, Bifidobacterium breve, Bifidobacterium longum, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Lactobacillus salivarius, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, and Lactobacillus helveticus), a proprietary probiotic blend with BIO-tract and LiveBac technology, and sodium. The bacteria are meant to support gut health and digestion.
The tablet also contains inactive ingredients including microcrystalline cellulose, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, pectin, stearic acid, guar gum, and turmeric.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Evidence for probiotics varies by strain and condition. Lactobacillus acidophilus is rated possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome, H. pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis.
Bifidobacterium bifidum is rated possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome and respiratory tract infections. Most other conditions listed—such as allergic rhinitis, anxiety, cognitive decline, and asthma—lack sufficient reliable evidence to rate these strains.
Sodium itself has limited established roles in this product's context; it is rated likely effective only for cystic fibrosis and possibly effective for amphotericin B side effects, though these are not typical reasons a customer would take a probiotic supplement.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
The probiotic bacteria in this product are generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. However, people who are seriously ill, immunocompromised, or in critical care should be cautious—rare cases of bacterial bloodstream infections (bacteremia) and sepsis have been reported with some of these strains, particularly in preterm infants and critically ill patients.
Gastrointestinal side effects like bloating, flatulence, abdominal discomfort, and gas can occur but are uncommon. Sodium is essential in small amounts, but too much is linked to high blood pressure and heart strain; the product's sodium content may be a concern if you're on a restricted-sodium diet or taking blood pressure medications.
Limited safety data exist overall, so check with your doctor or pharmacist before use, especially if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, ill, or have a weakened immune system.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take antibiotics (probiotics work best when separated from antibiotics by at least 2 hours), blood pressure medications, lithium, corticosteroids, didanosine, sodium phosphate bowel-prep solutions, tolvaptan, or any other sodium-containing drugs. Moderate interactions are documented for all of these categories.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This probiotic may be worth considering if you have irritable bowel syndrome, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, or related gut issues and are otherwise healthy. However, if you take blood pressure medications, lithium, corticosteroids, antibiotics, or HIV medications, or if you have a weakened immune system or are critically ill, talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist first.
The sodium content and live organisms mean this isn't one to start on your own without checking your full medication list and health status.

Probiotics by NutriClean Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
NutriClean Probiotics interacts with medications through its sodium and probiotic bacterial content.
The most serious interaction involves sodium and antihypertensive drugs (blood pressure medications), lithium, and corticosteroids, all rated Moderate severity. High sodium intake can reduce the effectiveness of blood pressure medications, alter lithium levels to dangerous degrees, and increase the risk of high blood sodium (hypernatremia) when combined with corticosteroids or certain other sodium-containing drugs.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The probiotic bacteria—Bifidobacterium breve, Bifidobacterium longum, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Lactobacillus acidophilus, and Lactobacillus helveticus—all interact with antibiotic drugs at Moderate severity. Since these probiotics contain live organisms, antibiotics taken at the same time can kill them and reduce the probiotic's effectiveness.
Separating doses (typically by 2 hours or more) can help.
Sodium also interacts with didanosine (an HIV medication), sodium phosphate bowel-prep solutions, tolvaptan (a water-balance drug), and other sodium-containing medications—all Moderate severity—by raising blood sodium levels. We could not check several probiotic ingredients: Bifidobacterium infantis, Lactobacillus salivarius, Lactobacillus plantarum, and Lactobacillus casei.
Altogether, these interactions span 387 individual medications. Check your exact medications with the search tool on this page before starting.

For each ingredient in Probiotics with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Sodium
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, a high intake of dietary sodium might reduce the effectiveness of antihypertensive drugs.
High intake of dietary sodium can increase systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Also, high intake of sodium may necessitate increased use of antihypertensive medications to achieve blood pressure control in some patients, such as those with chronic kidney disease.
Corticosteroids
Concomitant use of mineralocorticoids and some glucocorticoids with sodium supplements might increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Mineralocorticoids and some glucocorticoids (corticosteroids) cause sodium retention. This effect is dose-related and depends on mineralocorticoid potency. It is most common with hydrocortisone, cortisone, and fludrocortisone, followed by prednisone and prednisolone.
Didanosine (Videx)
Concomitant use of didanosine with additional sodium from dietary or supplemental sources may increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Didanosine formulations contain a significant amount of sodium.
Lithium
Altering dietary intake of sodium might alter the levels and clinical effects of lithium.
High sodium intake can reduce plasma concentrations of lithium by increasing lithium excretion. Reducing sodium intake can significantly increase plasma concentrations of lithium and cause lithium toxicity in patients being treated with lithium carbonate. Stabilizing sodium intake is shown to reduce the percentage of patients with lithium level fluctuations above 0.8 mEq/L. Patients taking lithium should avoid significant alterations in their dietary intake of sodium.
Sodium Phosphates
Theoretically, concomitant use of sodium phosphate with sodium supplements might increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Use of high doses (> 45 mL in 24 hours) of sodium phosphate, such as those used for bowel cleansing before surgery, can lead to serious electrolyte disturbances, including hypernatremia. The risk of hypernatremia is highest in the elderly and people with other risk factors for electrolyte disturbances.
Sodium-Containing Drugs
Concomitant use of sodium-containing drugs with additional sodium from dietary or supplemental sources may increase the risk of hypernatremia and long-term sodium-related complications.
The Chronic Disease Risk Reduction (CDRR) intake level of 2.3 grams of sodium daily indicates the intake at which it is believed that chronic disease risk increases for the apparently healthy population. Some medications contain high quantities of sodium. When used in conjunction with sodium supplements or high-sodium diets, the CDRR may be exceeded. Additionally, concomitant use may increase the risk for hypernatremia; this risk is highest in the elderly and people with other risk factors for electrolyte disturbances.
Tolvaptan (Samsca)
Theoretically, concomitant use of tolvaptan with sodium might increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Tolvaptan is a vasopressin receptor 2 antagonist that is used to increase sodium levels in patients with hyponatremia. Patients taking tolvaptan should use caution with the use of sodium salts such as sodium chloride.
Probiotic Complex Blend with BIO-tract and LiveBac technology
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
