ProstaCol contains 5 active ingredients formulated for prostate health. Lycopene is a carotenoid from tomato that may support prostate function.
Saw palmetto fruit extract is traditionally used for urinary and prostate symptoms. Stinging nettle root extract is included for urinary and prostate support.
Pygeum bark extract is also used for prostate and urinary health. The product also contains phytosterol complex, a plant-based compound.
These are supported by inactive ingredients including microcrystalline cellulose, hydroxypropylmethylcellulose, and tomato.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
The evidence for these ingredients varies. Lycopene is possibly effective for prostate cancer but possibly ineffective for bladder cancer and diabetes; data are insufficient to rate it for high cholesterol, ALS, and exercise-induced asthma.
Saw palmetto is possibly effective for transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) but possibly ineffective for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH); evidence is insufficient for other uses listed. Stinging nettle is possibly effective for diabetes and has insufficient evidence for hay fever, anemia, asthma, BPH, and gingivitis.
Pygeum is likely effective for benign prostatic hyperplasia but has insufficient evidence for Alzheimer's disease, malaria, sexual desire, and psychosis. We hold no effectiveness data for phytosterol complex.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lycopene supplements are generally well tolerated, though some people experience gastrointestinal side effects including diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, or abdominal discomfort. Saw palmetto is usually well tolerated with mild side effects, though rare cases of heart rhythm changes or skin reactions have been reported.
Stinging nettle is generally well tolerated orally, with constipation or diarrhea occurring occasionally. Pygeum appears well tolerated; nausea and abdominal pain rates in studies matched placebo.
Regarding pregnancy and breastfeeding: lycopene supplements lack adequate safety data and should be avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding unless your doctor advises otherwise. Saw palmetto should be avoided during both pregnancy and breastfeeding due to possible hormonal effects and insufficient safety data.
Stinging nettle should be avoided in pregnancy due to traditional uterine concerns and in breastfeeding due to lack of safety information. Pygeum has no established safe use in pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Saw Palmetto (Serenoa repens) fruit extract
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Saw palmetto might increase the risk of bleeding with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Saw palmetto is reported to prolong bleeding time. Theoretically, it might increase the risk of bleeding when used concomitantly with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Contraceptive Drugs
Saw palmetto might reduce the effectiveness of contraceptive drugs.
Saw palmetto might have antiestrogenic effects. Theoretically, it might interfere with contraceptive drugs taken concomitantly.
Estrogens
Saw palmetto might reduce the effectiveness of estrogens.
Saw palmetto might have antiestrogenic effects. Theoretically, it might interfere with estrogens taken concomitantly.
Stinging Nettle (Urtica dioica) root extract
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, stinging nettle might have additive effects with antidiabetes drugs.
Clinical research shows that stinging nettle might decrease blood glucose levels in patients with diabetes.
Diuretic Drugs
Theoretically, combining stinging nettle with diuretic drugs may have additive effects.
Animal research suggests that the above ground parts and roots of stinging nettle may have a diuretic effect.
Lithium
Theoretically, stinging nettle might reduce excretion and increase levels of lithium.
Animal research suggests that stinging nettle has diuretic and natriuretic properties, which could alter the excretion of lithium. The dose of lithium might need to be decreased.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
There is some concern that stinging nettle might decrease the effects of anticoagulant drugs such as warfarin.
Stinging nettle contains a significant amount of vitamin K. When taken in large quantities, this might interfere with the activity of warfarin.
Lycopene
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, taking lycopene with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs might increase the risk of bleeding.
In vitro research shows that lycopene has antiplatelet effects.
