Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 4 of its 4 active ingredients.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This formula contains 4 active ingredients targeting prostate health. Lycopene is a plant pigment with antioxidant properties.

Saw palmetto berries extract is made from the fruit of the saw palmetto plant. Beta-sitosterols are plant compounds that resemble cholesterol.

Pygeum bark extract comes from an African tree. The softgel also contains several inactive ingredients: soybean oil, gelatin, glycerin, soy lecithin, and caramel color as a colorant.

Strong evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Strong

Clinical evidence supports at least one of this product's ingredients for its stated purpose.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: support normal prostate function and urinary flow.
  • We looked for evidence on: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), Chronic prostatitis and chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS), Non-neurogenic lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), Prostatitis, prostate health, urinary symptoms — and 1 related terms.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Pygeum is rated "Likely Effective" for Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Beta-sitosterol is rated "Likely Effective" for Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
  • Also on file: Saw Palmetto is rated "Possibly Ineffective" for Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

The evidence for this formula's ingredients is mixed. Lycopene is possibly effective for prostate cancer but possibly ineffective for bladder cancer and diabetes — we don't have enough data to rate it for high cholesterol, ALS, or exercise-induced asthma.

Saw palmetto is possibly effective for one specific prostate procedure (TURP) but possibly ineffective for benign prostate enlargement (BPH) — the evidence is insufficient for other uses like hair loss or urinary symptoms. Beta-sitosterols and pygeum bark extract show stronger evidence: both are likely effective for benign prostate enlargement.

Beta-sitosterols are also possibly effective for high cholesterol and heart disease. If prostate health is your goal, the formula leans on ingredients with established benefit for that purpose, though lycopene and saw palmetto's evidence is weaker than you might hope.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 4 of the 4 matched ingredients.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 4 of 4.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 4 of 4.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Lycopene and beta-sitosterols are generally well tolerated orally. Saw palmetto is also well tolerated with mild, infrequent, and reversible side effects in most adults.

The most common side effects across all ingredients are gastrointestinal: diarrhea, constipation, gas, nausea, and abdominal discomfort. Lycopene may rarely cause vomiting or loss of appetite.

Saw palmetto may also cause headache, dizziness, fatigue, decreased libido, or a runny nose; very rarely, serious heart rhythm problems have been reported. For pregnancy and breastfeeding: saw palmetto should be avoided — the safety data advises against it during both.

Lycopene supplements are not well studied in pregnancy or while breastfeeding, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether to use it. For beta-sitosterols and pygeum, there isn't enough safety data during pregnancy or breastfeeding — discuss this with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product if you're pregnant, planning pregnancy, or nursing.

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 2 of the 4 matched ingredients can interact with medications — Lycopene, Saw Palmetto.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: anticoagulant / antiplatelet drugs.
  • For scale: 174 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before you take this product, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on any blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (like warfarin, clopidogrel, or aspirin) — lycopene and saw palmetto may increase bleeding risk. Also check if you take hormonal birth control or estrogen therapy — saw palmetto might reduce how well they work.

No interactions are documented for the other ingredients we could check.

Women and anyone pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding should not use it. Talk it over with your own doctor or pharmacist to see if it's right for your situation.

Prostate Formula by GNC Mega Men: Common Questions

Does Prostate Formula by GNC Mega Men interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Prostate Formula has a known interaction with 174 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Prostate Formula contains 4 active ingredients, and an interaction can come from any of them. We check every ingredient, combine the results into one list per medication, and show which ingredient and mechanism is responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Does this product really help with an enlarged prostate?
The evidence is modest. Beta-sitosterols and pygeum bark extract are likely effective for benign prostate enlargement. Saw palmetto is possibly effective for one specific prostate procedure but possibly ineffective for general prostate enlargement. Lycopene's benefit for prostate issues is less clear.
What are the most common side effects?
Gastrointestinal issues are most likely: diarrhea, constipation, gas, nausea, and abdominal discomfort. Saw palmetto may also cause headache, dizziness, or fatigue. Most side effects are mild and reversible.
Can I take this if I'm on blood thinners?
Not without checking first. Both lycopene and saw palmetto may increase bleeding risk. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting — they'll tell you whether it's safe for your specific situation.
Is this safe during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?
No. Saw palmetto should be avoided during both pregnancy and breastfeeding. Lycopene supplements and beta-sitosterols lack enough safety data during pregnancy and breastfeeding — discuss with your doctor or pharmacist first.
What exactly is lycopene, and why is it in a prostate formula?
Lycopene is a red plant pigment found in tomatoes and other fruits. It's in this formula because it's possibly effective for prostate cancer, though the evidence is not strong for other prostate conditions.
Can this affect my birth control?
Yes. Saw palmetto may reduce the effectiveness of hormonal birth control by interfering with how your body processes estrogen. If you take contraceptive pills or patches, check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding this product.
