HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Strontium Citrate 340 mg by Swanson
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: strontium, supplied as strontium citrate at 340 mg per capsule. The capsule itself is filled with inactive ingredients — gelatin, rice flour, calcium laurate, and silica — which are standard fillers and binders.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Strontium is rated effective for dental hypersensitivity and for pain from bony cancer spread. It's likely effective for osteoporosis and possibly effective for osteoarthritis and prostate cancer.
The evidence supporting these uses comes from clinical research, though for osteoarthritis and prostate cancer the data is more limited.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Strontium has been linked to serious heart and clotting risks, especially in its ranelate form — the data shows it can raise the risk of blood clots (venous thromboembolism) by about 50% and heart attacks by about 1.6-fold in people with osteoporosis. Common side effects include diarrhea, nausea, headache, and skin problems like dermatitis.
Rare serious side effects can include heart attack and blood clots. For pregnancy: the safety data advises against it.
For breastfeeding: there isn't enough information, so avoid it while nursing. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using strontium if you're pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take this, check if you're on estrogens or androgens (including testosterone), antacids, quinolone antibiotics (like ciprofloxacin), or tetracycline antibiotics (like doxycycline). All of these interact with strontium at moderate severity.
If you take antacids or antibiotics, space them at least 2 hours away from your strontium dose.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Strontium may help with bone pain, osteoporosis, and tooth sensitivity, but it carries real risks of blood clots and heart problems — especially if you have osteoporosis. Check your medications (especially hormones and antibiotics) with our tool before starting.
If you have a history of clots or heart disease, talk to your pharmacist or doctor first.

Strontium Citrate 340 mg by Swanson Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Strontium Citrate by Swanson does interact with several medication types, and some of those interactions are significant.
The most serious concern is with estrogens and androgens — both can theoretically reduce how your body excretes strontium, which may increase strontium levels and its side effects. A small study hints this might happen over 5–6 weeks of hormone treatment, though we don't yet know how much it matters clinically.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Antacids are another moderate concern. Aluminum hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide can cut strontium absorption by 20–25%, while calcium cuts it much more — to 60–70%.
If you take antacids, wait at least 2 hours before or after your strontium dose. Quinolone and tetracycline antibiotics also interact moderately; strontium can bind them in your gut and block their absorption.
Again, spacing them 2 hours apart helps.
Altogether, these interactions span 101 individual medications. Use the medication checker below to look up your exact prescriptions before you start.

For each ingredient in Strontium Citrate 340 mg with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Strontium
Androgens
Theoretically, androgens might reduce the excretion of strontium, potentially increasing its effects and adverse effects.
A small clinical study suggests that treatment with androgens such as testosterone, nandrolone, oxandrolone, and oxymetholone for 5-6 weeks might decrease urinary strontium excretion. The clinical significance of this interaction is unknown.
Antacids
Antacids can reduce the absorption of strontium, potentially decreasing its effectiveness.
Aluminum hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide can reduce absorption of strontium ranelate by 20% to 25%. Calcium can reduce its absorption to 60% to 70%. Avoid taking antacids within 2 hours of a dose of strontium ranelate. This interaction has also been reported with orally-administered radioactive strontium-85. It will likely also occur with other forms of strontium.
Estrogens
Theoretically, estrogens might reduce the excretion of strontium, potentially increasing its effects and adverse effects.
A small clinical study suggests that treatment with estrogens for 5-6 weeks might decrease urinary strontium excretion. The clinical significance of this interaction is unknown.
Quinolone Antibiotics
Theoretically, strontium might decrease the absorption of quinolone antibiotics.
Strontium is a divalent cation with similar properties to calcium. It is likely to form complexes with quinolones in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, preventing absorption of the antibiotic. Recommend taking strontium supplements at least 2 hours before or after quinolones to avoid an interaction.
Tetracycline Antibiotics
Theoretically, strontium might decrease the absorption of tetracycline antibiotics.
Strontium is a divalent cation with similar properties to calcium. It is likely to form complexes with tetracyclines in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, preventing absorption of the antibiotic. Recommend taking strontium supplements at least 2 hours before or after tetracyclines to avoid an interaction.
