What’s inside
Full disclosure
Super Saw Palmetto contains 2 active ingredients: saw palmetto extract and extra virgin olive oil. Saw palmetto has a long history of use for urinary and prostate concerns.
The olive oil serves as a carrier in the softgel capsule. The product also contains gelatin, glycerin, and purified water as inactive ingredients that help form and fill the capsule.
Does it work?
Leans against
Saw palmetto has possibly effective evidence for transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) recovery, but the evidence for benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate) points toward possibly ineffective. For other conditions like androgenic alopecia (male pattern baldness), chronic bronchitis, and lower urinary tract symptoms, the evidence is insufficient to rate it either way.
Extra virgin olive oil has insufficient reliable evidence to support its use for any of the conditions in our data.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Saw palmetto is generally well tolerated in adults, though mild side effects like headache, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, dizziness, and fatigue do occur. A small number of patients have reported fixed drug eruptions (localized blisters) or acne; these resolved when the supplement was stopped.
Rarely, cardiovascular effects like heart palpitations or blood pressure changes have been reported, though these are uncommon. Saw palmetto is rated likely unsafe in pregnancy and should be avoided while breastfeeding due to insufficient safety data.
Olive oil as a food is very safe, but the safety of concentrated olive supplements is not well established — concentrated supplements warrant your doctor's approval.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check your medications before taking this product if you're on blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel) — saw palmetto may increase bleeding risk. Also double-check if you take estrogens or birth control pills, as saw palmetto might reduce their effectiveness.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with graded evidence leaning against its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product may be worth considering if you're exploring natural options for prostate or urinary concerns and have discussed it with your doctor. If you take blood thinners, birth control, or hormone replacement therapy, you'll want to check with your pharmacist first — those are the interactions to watch.
Pregnant women and those breastfeeding should avoid it. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before starting, especially if you're on any regular medications.
