HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Taurine 500 mg by The Vitamin Shoppe
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains two active ingredients: taurine (the main ingredient, at 500 mg per capsule) and vitamin B6. The capsule itself is made of gelatin and rice flour as inactive ingredients.
Taurine is an amino acid your body makes naturally; it plays roles in heart and eye health and in bile acid metabolism. Vitamin B6 is a water-soluble B vitamin involved in nerve function, immune response, and the breakdown of amino acids.
The B6 in this product is present in a supporting role at a dose below what's typically used for B6 deficiency or neuropathy.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
The evidence for taurine's effectiveness is modest: it's rated possibly effective for hepatitis and congestive heart failure (CHF), and possibly ineffective for weight loss. Vitamin B6 has stronger evidence — it's effective for treating B6 deficiency itself and sideroblastic anemia (a blood disorder), and likely effective for lowering homocysteine levels.
It's also possibly effective for pregnancy-related nausea and vomiting, though only under a doctor's guidance. For the combined product as a taurine supplement, the data we hold focuses on taurine's uses, which remain modest in evidence.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Taurine is generally well tolerated in typical doses for up to a year, though long-term safety is less well established. The most common side effects are constipation, diarrhea, and indigestion.
Rare serious side effects include allergic reactions; people with a history of allergies to sulfonamides or sulfites should be cautious, as case reports describe allergic reactions to taurine supplements in sensitive individuals. Vitamin B6 at normal daily doses (under 100 mg) is generally well tolerated, with common mild side effects including headache, nausea, heartburn, and loss of appetite.
However, high doses over time — especially exceeding 1,000 mg daily — can cause nerve damage (sensory neuropathy), which can develop even at lower doses with prolonged use. Pregnancy and breastfeeding data aren't on file for either ingredient in the product facts we hold.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before starting this product, double-check if you take any of these: blood pressure medications (antihypertensive drugs) — both ingredients may lower your pressure further; seizure medications like phenytoin (Dilantin) or phenobarbital (Luminal) — high-dose B6 may reduce their effectiveness; amiodarone (Cordarone), a heart rhythm drug — B6 may worsen light sensitivity; levodopa (Sinemet) for Parkinson's — though only a concern if you're taking it without carbidopa; or lithium — taurine may raise its blood levels. No interactions are documented for the inactive ingredients.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product combines taurine and B6, both generally well tolerated at normal doses. If you take blood pressure medications, seizure drugs, amiodarone, or lithium, check your medications with the tool on this page before starting — the interactions are real.

Taurine 500 mg by The Vitamin Shoppe Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Taurine 500 mg by The Vitamin Shoppe contains two active ingredients — taurine and vitamin B6 — and together they interact with a number of medications.
Altogether, these interactions span 209 individual medications.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Vitamin B6 is the ingredient with the most documented interactions here. The most serious concern is with seizure medications: high doses of B6 (200 mg or more daily) may lower the blood levels and effectiveness of phenytoin (Dilantin) and phenobarbital (Luminal).
The same is true for amiodarone (Cordarone), a heart rhythm drug — B6 may worsen the light sensitivity that this medication can cause. Additionally, B6 has additive blood pressure–lowering effects with antihypertensive drugs (blood pressure medications), and it may reduce how well levodopa (a Parkinson's medication) works when taken without carbidopa, though this interaction doesn't occur when levodopa is combined with carbidopa (Sinemet).
Taurine adds two more moderate-severity interactions: it may strengthen the blood pressure–lowering effect of antihypertensive drugs, raising the risk of excessively low blood pressure, and it may increase lithium levels in your blood, potentially to unsafe amounts.
Before you start this product, run your exact medications through the interaction checker below — especially if you take seizure drugs, heart medications, blood pressure medications, or lithium.

For each ingredient in Taurine 500 mg with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Vitamin B6
Amiodarone (Cordarone)
Theoretically, vitamin B6 might increase the photosensitivity caused by amiodarone.
Despite initial case reports suggesting that pyridoxine may have a protective effect against amiodarone-induced photosensitivity, preliminary clinical research suggests that pyridoxine may actually exacerbate this adverse effect.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, vitamin B6 may have additive effects when used with antihypertensive drugs.
Research in hypertensive rats shows that vitamin B6 can decrease systolic blood pressure. Similarly, clinical research in patients with hypertension shows that taking high doses of vitamin B6 may reduce systolic and diastolic blood pressure, possibly by reducing plasma levels of epinephrine and norepinephrine.
Phenobarbital (Luminal)
High doses of vitamin B6 may reduce the levels and clinical effects of phenobarbital.
Preliminary clinical evidence suggests that vitamin B6 200 mg daily can reduce plasma levels of phenobarbital, possibly by increasing metabolism. It is not known whether lower doses have any effect. Advise people taking phenobarbital to avoid high doses of vitamin B6.
Phenytoin (Dilantin)
High doses of vitamin B6 may reduce the levels and clinical effects of phenytoin.
Preliminary clinical evidence suggests that vitamin B6 200 mg daily can reduce plasma levels of phenytoin, possibly by increasing metabolism. It is not known whether lower doses have any effect. Advise people taking phenytoin to avoid high doses of vitamin B6.
Levodopa
Vitamin B6 may increase the metabolism of levodopa when taken alone, but not when taken in conjunction with carbidopa.
Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) enhances the metabolism of levodopa, reducing its clinical effects. However, this interaction does not occur when carbidopa is used concurrently with levodopa (Sinemet). Therefore, it is not likely to be a problem in most people.
Taurine
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, taurine might increase the risk of hypotension when taken with antihypertensive drugs.
Some clinical evidence suggests that taurine can reduce both systolic and diastolic blood pressure.
Lithium
Theoretically, taurine might reduce excretion and increase plasma levels of lithium.
Taurine is thought to have diuretic properties, which might reduce the excretion of lithium.
