Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: L-theanine, an amino acid found naturally in green tea that's been studied for its effects on the mind and cognition. The remaining ingredients are inactive — they're just the capsule and various binders and fillers that hold it together.

Does it work?

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports this product's ingredients for its stated purpose, but it isn't conclusive.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: relaxation and brain wave support.
  • We looked for evidence on: Stress, Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), Cognitive function, relaxation, calm, alpha waves.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Theanine is rated "Possibly Effective" for Cognitive function (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Theanine is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Anxiety, Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), Stress.

L-theanine is possibly effective for supporting cognitive function, according to the evidence we have on file. For age-related cognitive decline, Alzheimer disease, generalized anxiety, OCD, and cancer, the research isn't established enough for us to rate it either way — there just isn't reliable data yet on whether it works for those uses.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

L-theanine is generally well tolerated in healthy adults when used short-term, but we don't have enough long-term safety data to know how it holds up with extended use. The most common side effects reported are headaches, drowsiness, longer sleep duration, and more vivid dreams.

One pediatric case of facial tics was reported after starting theanine, but the child had a history of tics and they stopped when the supplement was discontinued, so the link wasn't clear. There isn't enough safety data for pregnancy or breastfeeding, so the safety information advises against use during those times.

Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Theanine.

Before you take this product, check with your pharmacist if you're on blood pressure medications — theanine may lower blood pressure further. Also double-check if you take CNS depressants like sedatives or sleeping pills, or serotonergic medications like some antidepressants.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Theanine might help with mental focus if you're looking for that kind of support, but the evidence is still limited for most uses. The main caution is if you take blood pressure medication — you'll want to check with your pharmacist first because theanine could strengthen its effect.

If you're on sedatives or certain antidepressants, flag this with your pharmacist too.

L-Theanine3 drug types · 565 drugs

Antihypertensive Drugs

Theanine might lower blood pressure, potentiating the effects of antihypertensive drugs.
Animal research shows that theanine can lower blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive animals. Theoretically, concomitant use of theanine and antihypertensive drugs might potentiate the antihypertensive activity.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cns Depressants

Theoretically, theanine might have additive sedative effects when used in conjunction with CNS depressants. However, it is unclear if this concern is clinically relevant.
Theoretically, theanine may compete with glutamate and/or increase plasma gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels, which could cause CNS depression. In one clinical study, some subjects taking oral theanine reported drowsiness.

Likelihood Unlikely Evidence D
Serotonergic Drugs

Clinical studies regarding the effects of L-theanine on serotonin levels are conflicting. Some studies suggest it can increase serotonin levels in the brain while others report that it may decrease them. Nevertheless, there have been no reports of l-theanine being a causative agent in serotonergic-related side effects or serotonin syndrome.

Theanine 200 mg by Jarrow Formulas: Common Questions

Does Theanine 200 mg by Jarrow Formulas interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Theanine 200 mg has a known interaction with 565 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Theanine 200 mg contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
What does L-theanine actually do?
L-theanine is an amino acid from green tea that's been studied for cognitive function — it's possibly effective for that, based on the evidence we have. For other uses like anxiety, memory in aging, or Alzheimer disease, the research just isn't solid enough yet to say whether it works.
Will this make me drowsy?
Some people report drowsiness, longer sleep, and more vivid dreams after taking theanine. It's not universal, but it's worth knowing about — especially if you're planning to drive or need to be alert.
Is this safe to take long-term?
We don't have good long-term safety data for theanine. It's well tolerated in the short run in healthy adults, but we just don't know enough about extended use, so talk with your pharmacist if you're thinking of taking it regularly.
Can I take this while I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
There isn't enough safety data either way. The safety information advises against it during pregnancy and breastfeeding — talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice if you're in either situation.
Does this have any fillers or extra stuff?
Besides the L-theanine, the capsule contains typical inactive ingredients like microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, and silica — standard binders and capsule material.
