HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Tri-Iodine 25 mg by Terry Naturally
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Tri-Iodine contains 3 active ingredients: potassium iodide, sodium iodide, and molecular iodine — three different forms of iodine that work together to deliver 25 mg of iodine per capsule. The inactive ingredients are microcrystalline cellulose, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, and silica, which are standard capsule fillers and binders.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
The iodine in this product is likely effective for iodine deficiency and for protecting the thyroid after radiation exposure. It's also possibly effective for oral mucositis (mouth sores) and periodontitis (gum disease).
The data doesn't establish effectiveness for bipolar disorder or congestive heart failure. Keep in mind that iodine's main role is preventing or treating deficiency — if that's not your situation, talk with your pharmacist about whether you need it.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Iodine is generally well tolerated in normal dietary amounts, but high doses — like those in supplements — can cause thyroid problems including goiter, hypothyroidism, or hyperthyroidism. Potassium and sodium in this product also carry risks if levels get too high, especially in people with kidney disease.
Common side effects from the iodine include nausea, diarrhea, headache, metallic taste, and rhinorrhea. Rarely, high doses can cause acne-like skin lesions.
Both potassium iodide and sodium iodide are rated possibly unsafe in pregnancy or lactation when used as supplements — dietary amounts are fine, but supplemental doses need your doctor's approval. The iodine component is likely safe in pregnancy and lactation at appropriate doses under medical guidance.
Meds to double-check

For each ingredient in Tri-Iodine 25 mg with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Iodine
Amiodarone (Cordarone)
Combining iodine with amiodarone might cause excessively high iodine levels.
Amiodarone contains 37.3% iodine and can increase iodine levels. Concomitant use with iodine might increase the risk of having excessive iodine levels and adversely affecting thyroid function. Monitor thyroid function.
Antithyroid Drugs
Iodine might alter the effects of antithyroid drugs.
Iodine in high doses has been reported to cause both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, depending on the individual's past medical history. Taking iodine while using antithyroid drugs could alter the effects of the antithyroid drugs.
Lithium
Combining iodine with lithium might have additive hypothyroid effects.
Lithium can inhibit thyroid function. Several case reports suggest that concomitant use of lithium and potassium iodide can reduce thyroid function in otherwise healthy adults. Monitor thyroid function.
