HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Ultra Probiotic for Seniors by Swanson
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This is a probiotic formula with 6 active ingredients — four species of live beneficial bacteria (L. acidophilus, L. casei, B. bifidum, and L. rhamnosus HN001, plus B. lactis HN019) and FOS, a prebiotic fiber that feeds those good bacteria. The inactive ingredients are capsule material and processing aids: hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, and silica.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
L. acidophilus is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome, H. pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis; the evidence for atopic disease (eczema, asthma, allergies) suggests it's possibly ineffective. B. bifidum is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome and respiratory tract infections.
We don't have established evidence for either ingredient on hay fever, Alzheimer disease, or anxiety. We hold no effectiveness data for the other three ingredients in this product.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Both L. acidophilus and B. bifidum are generally well tolerated in healthy people. However, those with weakened immune systems need to be cautious — probiotics contain live organisms that could theoretically cause infection in certain situations, though this is rare.
Side effects from the probiotics are uncommon but can include bloating, flatulence, abdominal discomfort, and occasionally diarrhea. One trial reported a rash with itching, though it's unclear whether the probiotics or another factor caused it.
For pregnancy and breastfeeding, L. acidophilus and B. bifidum are rated possibly safe, but we hold no safety data for the other three ingredients — talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this product is right for you if you're pregnant or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check before taking this product if you use antibiotic drugs. Antibiotics can kill the live bacteria in the supplement and make it less effective, so you'll need to space them out — ask your pharmacist exactly how many hours apart.
We have no documented interactions for the other ingredients we could check.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This senior-focused probiotic may help with irritable bowel syndrome, certain infections, or antibiotic-related diarrhea if you space it away from antibiotics. It's generally well tolerated in healthy people, but check with your doctor first if your immune system is compromised.
Before you start, talk with your pharmacist about your current medications — especially antibiotics — to see if any need timing adjustments.

Ultra Probiotic for Seniors by Swanson Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Swanson's Ultra Probiotic for Seniors contains live probiotic organisms — L. acidophilus and B. bifidum — that interact with antibiotic drugs.
When you take antibiotics at the same time, they can kill the beneficial bacteria in the supplement, making the probiotics less effective.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Antibiotic drugs are the main concern here (Moderate severity). Since both L. acidophilus and B. bifidum are live organisms, antibiotics will damage them.
The fix is straightforward: separate when you take them — ask your pharmacist how many hours apart to space them.
We could not check three other ingredients in this product — L. casei, FOS, and L. rhamnosus HN001, and B. lactis HN019 — because we hold no interaction data for them. Altogether, these interactions span 182 individual medications.
Before you start, run your exact medications through the checker on this page to see if any apply to you.
