Ultra Probiotics Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Natures Plus
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Ultra Probiotics against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Ultra Probiotics by Natures Plus
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
Ultra Probiotics contains 13 active ingredients: a blend of beneficial bacteria (Lactobacillus acidophilus, L. lactis, Bifidobacterium animalis lactis, Streptococcus thermophilus, L. casei, B. bifidum, L. plantarum, L. rhamnosus, L. bulgaricus, L. brevis, and L. sporogenes), fructooligosaccharides (a prebiotic fiber that feeds good bacteria), and acai whole fruit concentrate. The remaining ingredients are inactive fillers and binders like microcrystalline cellulose and magnesium stearate that help hold the capsule together.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
For the probiotic strains we have data on: Lactobacillus acidophilus is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome, Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis. Bifidobacterium bifidum is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome and respiratory tract infections.
L. sporogenes (Bacillus coagulans) is possibly effective for constipation and irritable bowel syndrome. Streptococcus thermophilus and the other Lactobacillus species in the blend don't have established effectiveness for the conditions we checked — the evidence isn't there yet.
Fructooligosaccharides and acai both lack reliable evidence for their listed uses. The other probiotic strains have no effectiveness data on file.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium bifidum, and most of the other live probiotic bacteria in this product are generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. However, there is a theoretical concern that any live probiotic organism could cause infection in patients with severely weakened immune systems, those on indwelling catheters, or those who are critically ill — in rare cases, some probiotics have been associated with serious infections like sepsis or endocarditis in these populations.
Fructooligosaccharides commonly cause gas, bloating, and abdominal discomfort, especially at higher doses; most people who experience these side effects find them mild. Some people taking probiotics have reported mild gastrointestinal upset including flatulence, bloating, and abdominal pain, though these events are uncommon.
Data on acai supplement safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding is limited, so caution is advised if you're pregnant or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your pharmacist if you take antibiotic drugs — you'll need to separate them from this product by several hours to keep the probiotics effective. If you take any diabetes medication, discuss this product first because acai may affect blood sugar control.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product is worth considering if you're dealing with irritable bowel syndrome, antibiotic-related diarrhea, or respiratory health — those uses have some supporting evidence. If you take antibiotics or diabetes medications, you'll need to talk with your pharmacist about timing and whether this is right for you.
People with compromised immune systems should check with their doctor first. Most healthy people tolerate probiotics well, but be prepared for some gas or bloating initially.

Ultra Probiotics by Natures Plus Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Ultra Probiotics by Natures Plus contains several probiotic bacteria and acai fruit concentrate.
The most serious interaction we've documented is with antibiotic drugs — four of the active probiotic ingredients (Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium bifidum, L. bulgaricus, and L. sporogenes) may have reduced effectiveness when taken at the same time as antibiotics, because the antibiotics can kill off the live organisms in the supplement. You'll want to space them out — typically 2 hours apart, though ask your pharmacist for the timing that works best for your specific antibiotic.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Acai whole fruit concentrate in this product may interfere with blood sugar control if you take diabetes medications. Preliminary research suggests acai could raise or lower fasting blood glucose, so if you're on any diabetes drug, this is worth discussing with your doctor or pharmacist.
We were unable to check L. lactis, Bifidobacterium animalis lactis, L. casei, L. plantarum, L. rhamnosus, and L. brevis for interactions — we hold no data on those ingredients. Altogether, these interactions span 267 individual medications.
Use the medication checker on this page to search your exact drugs.

Lactobacillus acidophilus
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
B. bifidum
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium. bifidum with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. bifidum.
Since B. bifidum preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. bifidum preparations by at least 2 hours.
L. bulgaricus
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus delbrueckii with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. delbrueckii.
Lactobacillus delbrueckii preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. delbrueckii preparations by at least two hours.
L. sporogenes
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking antibiotics with Bacillus coagulans might decrease the effectiveness of B. coagulans.
B. coagulans preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. coagulans preparations by at least two hours.
Acai Whole Fruit Concentrate
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking acai with antidiabetes drugs might interfere with glycemic control.
Preliminary clinical research in healthy adults has shown that taking acai may increase or decrease levels of fasting blood glucose.
