What’s inside
Full disclosure
Ultra Theanine is a single-ingredient supplement containing L-theanine, an amino acid naturally found in green tea. L-theanine is thought to promote relaxation and support mental focus without causing drowsiness on its own, though the research on specific benefits is still developing.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
L-theanine has possibly effective evidence for supporting cognitive function. For age-related cognitive decline, Alzheimer disease, generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and cancer prevention or treatment, the evidence we hold is insufficient to rate whether it works.
If you're considering this for a specific health goal, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about what the current research shows for your situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-theanine is generally well tolerated in healthy adults for short-term use, but long-term safety hasn't been well studied. Some people report headaches, drowsiness, increased sleep length, or more vivid dreams after taking it.
There is not enough safety data during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The facts advise against using this supplement if you're pregnant or nursing — talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized guidance, especially if you're considering it for a specific reason.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking Ultra Theanine, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take blood pressure medications (Moderate interaction risk), sedatives or sleep aids, or antidepressants and other serotonin-affecting drugs (Minor interaction risk for both). No interactions are documented for other drug types we checked.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Ultra Theanine may appeal to you if you're looking to support focus and relaxation and don't take blood pressure or psychiatric medications. If you're on antihypertensive drugs, sedatives, or antidepressants, you'll want to check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding this product.
Pregnant or breastfeeding? The safety data isn't there yet, so run it past your provider first.

L-Theanine monograph & interactionsUltra Theanine by Vera's Formulations Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Ultra Theanine by Vera's Formulations contains L-theanine, which has documented interactions with antihypertensive drugs (blood pressure medications), CNS depressants (sedatives, sleep aids, anxiety medications), and serotonergic drugs (antidepressants and similar mood-affecting medications).
The most serious concern is a Moderate-severity interaction with blood pressure medications: theanine may lower blood pressure on its own, and using it alongside antihypertensive drugs could strengthen their effect and drop your pressure too far.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
With CNS depressants and serotonergic drugs, the interactions are rated Minor. Theanine might add to the drowsiness or sedation from sleep aids and anti-anxiety medications, though it's unclear how often this matters in real life.
For serotonergic drugs (like SSRIs), study results conflict on whether theanine raises or lowers serotonin levels, and no cases of serotonin syndrome have been reported from theanine use.
Additionally, no interactions are documented for other drug types. Altogether, these interactions span 565 individual medications.
If you take any blood pressure, sleep, anxiety, or antidepressant medication, run your exact drugs through the search tool below before starting this product.

For each ingredient in Ultra Theanine with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
L-Theanine
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theanine might lower blood pressure, potentiating the effects of antihypertensive drugs.
Animal research shows that theanine can lower blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive animals. Theoretically, concomitant use of theanine and antihypertensive drugs might potentiate the antihypertensive activity.
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, theanine might have additive sedative effects when used in conjunction with CNS depressants. However, it is unclear if this concern is clinically relevant.
Theoretically, theanine may compete with glutamate and/or increase plasma gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels, which could cause CNS depression. In one clinical study, some subjects taking oral theanine reported drowsiness.
Serotonergic Drugs
Clinical studies regarding the effects of L-theanine on serotonin levels are conflicting. Some studies suggest it can increase serotonin levels in the brain while others report that it may decrease them. Nevertheless, there have been no reports of l-theanine being a causative agent in serotonergic-related side effects or serotonin syndrome.
