Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient White Mulberry product and its label doesn't state a use — see White Mulberry's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The evidence for white mulberry leaf extract isn't established for the conditions we have data on. Our records show insufficient reliable evidence to rate it for hair loss (androgenic alopecia), bone health (osteoporosis), colds, blood sugar control (diabetes), or cholesterol (hyperlipidemia).

That doesn't mean it won't work — it means the clinical evidence so far isn't solid enough to make a confident claim either way.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data

Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

White mulberry leaf powder is generally well tolerated when taken orally. The most common side effects are mild digestive ones: bloating, flatulence, constipation, and loose stools.

In one clinical study at 4.6 grams three times daily, about half the patients reported bloating or gas, a quarter had loose stools, and about one in five had constipation — but these effects often eased over the 12-week study, suggesting they may be temporary. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, the safety data isn't there.

The facts advise against medicinal amounts during pregnancy and lactation. If you're pregnant or nursing and interested in this product, talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice.

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — White Mulberry.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: diabetes medications.
  • For scale: 87 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

If you take antidiabetes drugs (insulin, metformin, sulfonylureas, or others), monitor your blood glucose closely — white mulberry leaf can lower it further and raise the risk of low blood sugar. Also double-check any medications that are OCT2 substrates (drugs processed through the kidneys), as the extract may slow their clearance.

Antidiabetes Drugs

Theoretically, white mulberry leaf might increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
Clinical research shows that white mulberry leaf can lower blood glucose levels. Advise patients to monitor glucose levels closely.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Organic Cation Transporter 2 (Oct2) Substrates

Theoretically, white mulberry leaf might slow the elimination and increase the adverse effects of drugs which are OCT2 substrates.
Animal research shows that coadministration of white mulberry leaf extract with metformin, an OCT2 substrate, slows the renal elimination of metformin via inhibition of OCT2 activity. OCT2 is expressed in the kidneys and is responsible for transporting cationic drugs into tubular epithelial cells in order to be excreted in the urine.

White Mulberry Extract by BulkSupplements.com: Common Questions

Does White Mulberry Extract by BulkSupplements.com interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, White Mulberry Extract has a known interaction with 87 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
White Mulberry Extract contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
What side effects might I experience?
The most common are digestive: bloating, gas, constipation, or loose stools. They're usually mild and may fade over time as your body adjusts. In one study at higher doses, about half of people experienced bloating or gas during the first few weeks.
Is white mulberry extract safe if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
There isn't enough safety data to know. The facts advise against medicinal amounts during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist — they can give you personalized guidance based on your situation.
Does it actually work for blood sugar or cholesterol?
The evidence we have isn't strong enough to rate it yet. Research shows white mulberry leaf can lower blood glucose in the lab, but we don't have solid clinical data proving it works reliably for diabetes or high cholesterol in real people.
Why do I need to monitor blood sugar if I take diabetes medication?
White mulberry leaf can lower blood glucose on its own. Combined with your diabetes drug, that means your blood sugar could drop too low. Monitoring helps you and your doctor catch that early and adjust doses if needed.
