What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: a wormwood extract in powder form, concentrated at a 4:1 ratio. Wormwood is an herb traditionally used for digestive and biliary support.
There are no other inactive ingredients listed.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence on wormwood for the conditions it's used for—biliary disorders, Crohn disease, depression, indigestion (dyspepsia), and osteoarthritis—is insufficient. We don't have reliable data showing it works for any of these in our current information.
If you're considering it for a specific health concern, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether the evidence supports its use for your situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Wormwood contains thujone, a neurotoxic compound that can be harmful, especially in higher amounts or with long-term use. Short-term use of properly prepared products may be acceptable, but the risks increase with dose and duration.
Common side effects from the oil include muscle aches, nausea, and vomiting. Rare but serious effects include acute kidney damage, muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis), and seizures.
Chronic use of absinthe—an alcoholic drink containing wormwood—has been linked to addiction, severe gastrointestinal problems, insomnia, hallucinations, tremors, paralysis, and neurological damage. Wormwood is unsafe in pregnancy because it may stimulate the uterus.
There isn't enough safety information to use it while breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take anticonvulsant medications (drugs used to prevent seizures), check your specific medication with the tool on this page before using wormwood. Thujone in the extract may interfere with how these drugs work and increase seizure risk.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Wormwood is not well-studied for the conditions people typically use it for, and it carries real safety concerns, especially with prolonged use or higher doses. The main risk is interaction with seizure medications.
If you take anticonvulsants, or if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, this product isn't appropriate—talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting it. Even if you don't have those concerns, discuss whether short-term use makes sense for your specific health goals.
