Wormwood contains thujone, a neurotoxin, and short-term use of properly prepared products may be acceptable, but higher amounts can be unsafe. The most common side effects from wormwood oil are muscle aches, nausea, and vomiting.

Rare but serious effects—acute kidney damage, rhabdomyolysis (severe muscle breakdown), and seizures—have been reported. Chronic use, especially of absinthe (an alcoholic drink containing wormwood), has historically been linked to addiction, hallucinations, tremors, paralysis, and brain damage.

Wormwood is unsafe in pregnancy because it may stimulate the uterus, and there isn't enough safety data to recommend it while breastfeeding.
