Here's the concern with pairing wormwood and your zonisamide. Wormwood's essential oil contains a compound called thujone, which in larger amounts can actually lower the seizure threshold, meaning it may make the brain more prone to seizure activity. Since zonisamide is doing the opposite job, calming abnormal electrical signals to keep seizures away, thujone could theoretically work against it and make your medication less effective at preventing breakthrough seizures.

I'll be honest though, this is based mostly on lab and animal data, not human studies, so it's a theoretical caution rather than a proven problem. Zonisamide isn't a prodrug, so this is about thujone's own seizure-promoting effect, not a metabolism issue. To stay safe, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding wormwood.

Wormwood is a very bitter herb traditionally used to stimulate appetite and ease digestion, and it has early research interest in Crohn's disease. What Is Zonisamide Used For?

Brand names: Zonegran, Zonisade

Zonisamide is used as add-on therapy — meaning it is combined with other seizure medications, not used alone — to treat partial seizures (seizures that start in one part of the brain) in adults with epilepsy. Zonegran (capsule) and generic zonisamide capsules are approved for adults with epilepsy.

Zonisade (oral suspension) is approved as add-on therapy for partial-onset seizures in adults and in patients 16 years of age and older.
