Wormwood Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Wormwood against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: organic wormwood. Wormwood is a plant that's been used traditionally to support digestive function and other purposes, though the evidence for most of those uses isn't well established yet.
The liquid also contains grain alcohol and deionized water as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence we hold doesn't establish that wormwood is effective for biliary disorders, Crohn disease, depression, dyspepsia (indigestion), or osteoarthritis. For all of these uses, the data rates it as having insufficient reliable evidence.
If you're considering wormwood for a specific health concern, talk with your doctor about whether the evidence supports it for your situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Wormwood contains thujone, a neurotoxin that can be toxic in higher amounts. Short-term use of properly prepared products may be acceptable, but the safety data advises against it during pregnancy because it may stimulate the uterus.
There isn't enough safety information to recommend it while breastfeeding either. Common side effects from the wormwood oil include diffuse muscle aches, nausea, and vomiting.
Rare but serious side effects can include acute kidney damage, muscle breakdown, and seizures. Chronic, heavy use has been historically linked to addiction, hallucinations, tremors, paralysis, and brain damage.
Because this is a concentrated liquid, stick to short-term use only and follow the label directions carefully.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Anticonvulsant medications (seizure-prevention drugs) are the concern here — thujone in wormwood may reduce their effectiveness. Check your exact medication names with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Wormwood is generally well tolerated at short-term doses, but it carries real risks — especially the thujone neurotoxin in the oil and the serious potential for kidney and muscle damage with higher amounts. If you take anticonvulsant medications, you'll need to clear it with your doctor or pharmacist first.
Before you start, check your medications using the tool on this page, and talk with your healthcare provider about whether short-term use makes sense for you.
