HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Zychrome 400 mcg by Source Naturals
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Zychrome 400 mcg is a single-ingredient supplement containing chromium, an essential mineral that plays a role in blood sugar regulation and nutrient metabolism. The inactive ingredients are microcrystalline cellulose, stearic acid, and silica — standard tablet binders and fillers.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Chromium is likely effective for treating chromium deficiency, which is rare in people eating a balanced diet. For diabetes and prediabetes, the evidence is mixed — the data shows chromium is possibly effective for type 2 diabetes but possibly ineffective for prediabetes.
The evidence does not support its use for schizophrenia or high blood pressure.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chromium at typical supplement doses is generally well tolerated. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal irritation, headaches, insomnia, irritability, and mood changes.
Rare but serious effects — including kidney or liver damage, muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis), and low platelet counts — have been reported, mostly with higher or long-term doses. Some people have also reported skin rashes, hives, and contact dermatitis reactions.
Because safety data on higher supplement doses is limited, avoid extra chromium unless your doctor specifically recommends it. If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, small amounts from a balanced diet or prenatal vitamin are considered acceptable, but additional supplement doses should be avoided unless your doctor advises otherwise.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before starting Zychrome, double-check your exact medications with the search tool on this page. The biggest concerns are insulin and antidiabetic drugs (moderate risk of low blood sugar), levothyroxine or other thyroid hormones (moderate risk of reduced absorption), and NSAIDs and aspirin (minor risk of increased chromium levels).
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Chromium is worth considering if you have a confirmed chromium deficiency or are exploring it for type 2 diabetes management — but only under your doctor's supervision. If you take insulin, antidiabetic medication, levothyroxine, or regular NSAIDs or aspirin, talk with your pharmacist before adding this product.
A simple medication check here takes just a moment and could save you from a dosing conflict.

Zychrome 400 mcg by Source Naturals Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Zychrome 400 mcg from Source Naturals contains chromium, which interacts with several medication types.
The most serious concern is with insulin and antidiabetic drugs — chromium may boost insulin sensitivity and theoretically increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). If you take insulin or diabetes medication, your provider may need to monitor your blood sugar more closely or adjust your dose.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Chromium also interacts moderately with levothyroxine (Synthroid and generics), the standard thyroid hormone replacement. Research shows that chromium can bind levothyroxine in your gut and reduce how much your body absorbs — one clinical study found a 17% drop in blood levothyroxine levels when taken together.
Taking levothyroxine at least 2 hours apart from chromium can help minimize this effect.
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen and aspirin may increase how much chromium your body absorbs and retains, though the clinical significance is unclear. These are minor interactions, but worth knowing.
Altogether, these interactions span 177 individual medications. Use the medication checker on this page to look up your exact prescriptions before starting this product.

Chromium
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, chromium may have additive effects with antidiabetic agents and increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Some research shows that taking chromium might lower blood glucose levels, especially in patients with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes.
Insulin
Theoretically, concomitant use of chromium and insulin might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
In clinical research, chromium has been shown to increase insulin sensitivity,
Levothyroxine (Synthroid, Others)
Chromium might bind levothyroxine in the intestinal tract and decrease levothyroxine absorption.
Clinical research in healthy volunteers shows that taking chromium picolinate 1000 mcg with levothyroxine 1 mg decreases serum levels of levothyroxine by 17% when compared to taking levothyroxine alone. Advise patients to take levothyroxine at least 30 minutes before or 3-4 hours after taking chromium.
Aspirin
Theoretically, aspirin might increase chromium absorption.
Animal research suggests that aspirin may increase chromium absorption and chromium levels in the blood.
Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (Nsaids)
NSAIDs might increase chromium levels in the body.
Drugs that are prostaglandin inhibitors, such as NSAIDs, seem to increase chromium absorption and retention.
