Here's the gist: Maprotiline already nudges up the brain chemicals that affect mood, including serotonin. Some animal studies suggest acetyl-L-carnitine may also raise serotonin levels in the brain. Put the two together, and the theory is that you could get a little more serotonin activity than intended.

I want to be honest with you, though: this concern comes only from lab and animal research, not from real patient cases, so the actual risk for most people is likely low. Still, it's worth knowing the warning signs of too much serotonin, like agitation, a racing heart, sweating, shivering, or muscle twitching. If you notice those, reach out to your doctor. And before adding acetyl-L-carnitine, please run it by your pharmacist or prescriber first.
