Here's the thing to know: both alder buckthorn and casanthranol are stimulant laxatives. They work in very similar ways, nudging the colon to contract and pulling more water into the bowel. So when you take them together, you're essentially doubling up on the same job.

The worry isn't a chemical reaction between them, it's that the effects stack. You could end up with more cramping, watery diarrhea, and over time too much fluid and electrolyte loss (think potassium and sodium). That can leave you feeling weak, dizzy, or with an off heartbeat. This is based on how these products work rather than hard clinical studies, so it's more of a sensible caution than a red alert. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.
