Chlorthalidone falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Alder Buckthorn interacts with.

Alder buckthorn has stimulant laxative effects. Theoretically, overuse of alder buckthorn might compound diuretic-induced potassium loss. There is some concern that people taking alder buckthorn along with potassium depleting diuretics might have an increased risk for hypokalemia.
Some diuretics that can deplete potassium include chlorothiazide (Diuril), chlorthalidone (Thalitone), furosemide (Lasix), and hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ, HydroDIURIL, Microzide), and others.

Here's the thing to keep in mind with these two together. Chlorthalidone is a water pill that already pushes your body to flush out potassium along with extra salt and fluid. Alder buckthorn, as a stimulant laxative, makes you lose fluid and electrolytes through your bowels. Stack them up and you could lose more potassium than you'd want.

If potassium drops too low (called hypokalemia), you might feel muscle cramps, weakness, fatigue, or notice an irregular heartbeat. I want to be straight with you though: this concern is theoretical, based on how each one works, not on solid studies. Occasional, short-term laxative use is unlikely to cause trouble. Regular or heavy use is where I'd worry. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Chlorthalidone Used For?

Brand names: Hygroton, Thalitone

Chlorthalidone is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of serious cardiovascular events, especially strokes and heart attacks. It can be used alone or combined with other blood pressure medicines.

Chlorthalidone is also used as an add-on treatment for edema (fluid buildup) caused by heart failure, liver cirrhosis, and kidney conditions including nephrotic syndrome, acute glomerulonephritis, and chronic renal failure. Thalitone is additionally indicated for edema associated with heart failure, liver cirrhosis, and renal disease including nephrotic syndrome.
