Chlorothiazide falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Alder Buckthorn interacts with.

Alder buckthorn has stimulant laxative effects. Theoretically, overuse of alder buckthorn might compound diuretic-induced potassium loss. There is some concern that people taking alder buckthorn along with potassium depleting diuretics might have an increased risk for hypokalemia.
Some diuretics that can deplete potassium include chlorothiazide (Diuril), chlorthalidone (Thalitone), furosemide (Lasix), and hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ, HydroDIURIL, Microzide), and others.

Here's the concern with pairing these two. Chlorothiazide (Diuril) is a water pill that already nudges your kidneys to flush out extra salt and fluid, and along the way it tends to lower your potassium. Alder buckthorn is a stimulant laxative, and when you have a lot of loose stools you can lose potassium too. Stack them together and, at least on paper, you could end up with potassium dropping lower than it should.

Low potassium can show up as muscle cramps, weakness, tiredness, or an irregular heartbeat. I'll be honest though: this is a theoretical worry based on how each one works, not something proven in studies. A brief, occasional use is far less of an issue than taking buckthorn regularly. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and they can keep an eye on your potassium.

What Is Chlorothiazide Used For?

Brand name: Diuril

Chlorothiazide is used to reduce fluid buildup (edema) linked to conditions such as heart failure, liver cirrhosis (hepatic cirrhosis), and certain kidney disorders — including nephrotic syndrome, acute glomerulonephritis, and chronic renal failure. It is also used when edema is caused by corticosteroid or estrogen therapy.

The oral suspension (Diuril) is additionally approved to treat high blood pressure, either on its own or alongside other blood pressure medications. The intravenous forms — including Sodium Diuril, Chlorothiazide Sodium, and Chlorothiazide injection products — are reserved for treating edema in patients who cannot take oral medication or in emergency situations; these intravenous products are not approved for high blood pressure management.
