Bumetanide falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Alder Buckthorn interacts with.

Alder buckthorn has stimulant laxative effects. Theoretically, overuse of alder buckthorn might compound diuretic-induced potassium loss. There is some concern that people taking alder buckthorn along with potassium depleting diuretics might have an increased risk for hypokalemia.
Some diuretics that can deplete potassium include chlorothiazide (Diuril), chlorthalidone (Thalitone), furosemide (Lasix), and hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ, HydroDIURIL, Microzide), and others.

Here's the gist with bumetanide (Burinex) and alder buckthorn. Bumetanide is a loop diuretic, and one of its known habits is flushing potassium out of your body along with the extra water and salt. Alder buckthorn, used as a stimulant laxative, can also pull potassium out through your bowel. Stack the two and, at least in theory, you could lose more potassium than either would cause alone.

Low potassium (hypokalemia) can show up as muscle cramps, weakness, fatigue, or an irregular heartbeat. To be fair, this concern is theoretical and based on how these two work, not on solid studies. Occasional, short-term laxative use is less worrisome than regular use. Still, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, especially if you use alder buckthorn often.

What Is Bumetanide Used For?

Brand name: Burinex

Bumetanide treats edema — excess fluid that builds up in the body — caused by congestive heart failure, hepatic (liver) disease, and renal (kidney) disease, including a condition called nephrotic syndrome. This applies to the oral tablets (bumetanide and Bumex), the injection (Bumetanide Injection), and the nasal spray.

Enbumyst (bumetanide nasal spray) is specifically approved for these same uses in adults. Enbumyst is not intended for long-term use and should be switched to an oral diuretic as soon as practical.
