ORAL DRUGS
Why this applies to Amiloride, Hydrochlorothiazide
Amiloride, Hydrochlorothiazide falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Algin interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with your amiloride/hydrochlorothiazide water pill. Algin is a seaweed-based soluble fiber that swells into a thick gel in your stomach. In theory, that gel can grab onto a pill sitting in your gut and slow or slightly reduce how much medicine you actually absorb. If less of your diuretic gets in, you might not get the full effect on your blood pressure or fluid balance.
To be fair, this is a theoretical concern based on lab work, not strong human studies, and it's rated minor. Food-level amounts (like algin used as a thickener) are unlikely to matter much. A simple fix is spacing them out: take your medication first, then the algin supplement 30 to 60 minutes later. If you use it regularly, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor.

About Algin
What is Algin?
- Heartburn and acid reflux (in combination products)
- Lowering cholesterol
- Digestive health and feeling full
- Use as a thickener and binder in foods and medicines
- Weight management
Algin (alginate) is a fiber-like substance from brown seaweed that is widely used as a thickener, gel, and binder in foods and medicines. Its best-known medical use is in heartburn products, where it forms a barrier that helps reduce acid reflux; evidence for other uses like lowering cholesterol or weight loss is weaker. It is generally considered safe in food amounts, but check with your pharmacist before using it as a supplement, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
