ORAL DRUGS
Why this applies to Aspirin, Pentazocine
Aspirin, Pentazocine falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Algin interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with Talwin Compound (which pairs aspirin with the pain reliever pentazocine) and algin. Algin is basically a seaweed-based soluble fiber that swells into a thick gel in your stomach. The concern is purely about timing of absorption: that gel could slow down or slightly reduce how much of your medicine gets soaked up if you swallow them together. This is a theoretical, minor idea drawn from lab work, not something proven to cause real problems in people.
If absorption dipped, you might just get a bit less pain relief than expected. Nothing dangerous here, but to keep things simple, take your Talwin first and wait about 30 to 60 minutes before any algin supplement. Food amounts are unlikely to matter. When in doubt, ask your pharmacist.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Aspirin, Pentazocine page
“Talwin Compound pairs pentazocine, an opioid painkiller, with aspirin, and I read its supplement list with more concern than most. The great majority of entries do one of two things: raise the bleeding risk that aspirin already carries, or deepen the sedation pentazocine causes.”

About Algin
What is Algin?
- Heartburn and acid reflux (in combination products)
- Lowering cholesterol
- Digestive health and feeling full
- Use as a thickener and binder in foods and medicines
- Weight management
Algin (alginate) is a fiber-like substance from brown seaweed that is widely used as a thickener, gel, and binder in foods and medicines. Its best-known medical use is in heartburn products, where it forms a barrier that helps reduce acid reflux; evidence for other uses like lowering cholesterol or weight loss is weaker. It is generally considered safe in food amounts, but check with your pharmacist before using it as a supplement, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
