Clofazimine falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Algin interacts with.

Theoretically, algin can alter the absorption of oral drugs. Laboratory research shows that algin, when consumed as part of the diet or used as a thickening agent in infant formula, reduces the absorption of certain minerals. Also, algin has been used as a tablet binder and disintegrant to enhance drug bioavailability. To avoid changes in absorption, take algin 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the simple version. Algin is basically a soluble seaweed fiber that swells into a thick gel in your stomach. The concern with clofazimine (Lamprene) is purely about timing and absorption. That gel could grab onto the medicine and slow or reduce how much of it gets into your body, which in theory might make it work less well against your infection. This is not about clofazimine building up or becoming more toxic.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. It's theoretical, based on how algin behaves in the lab, not on real reports with this drug. A practical fix is to take your clofazimine first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before any algin supplement. Food amounts are unlikely to matter much, but check with your pharmacist or doctor to be sure.

What Is Clofazimine Used For?

Brand name: Lamprene

Lamprene (clofazimine) is used to treat lepromatous leprosy — the most severe form of leprosy — including cases where the bacteria have become resistant to dapsone. It is also used when leprosy is complicated by erythema nodosum leprosum (ENL), a painful inflammatory reaction that can occur alongside the infection.

Lamprene is always used as part of a combination regimen with other anti-leprosy drugs. Using it alone for initial treatment raises the risk of drug resistance.
