ORAL DRUGS
Why this applies to Phenylephrine
Phenylephrine falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Algin interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist: algin is basically a seaweed fiber that swells into a thick gel in your stomach. When you swallow oral phenylephrine (like Sudafed PE or a chewable form) around the same time, that gel could, in theory, trap a little of the drug and slow how much your body absorbs. If that happened, your decongestant might work a bit less well, so you may not get the full relief from a stuffy or congested nose.
I want to be honest with you though: this is a theoretical concern based on lab work, not real patient reports, and it's rated as minor. To be safe and keep things simple, take your phenylephrine first and wait about 30 to 60 minutes before using an algin product. If you have questions, your pharmacist is happy to help.

Questions About Algin or Phenylephrine
These are real questions from readers, answered by the pharmacists at HelloPharmacist — written by a person, not generated from a database. Each one covers Algin or Phenylephrine, not necessarily both, but if one is close to what you were about to ask it will usually go further than a database entry can:

See Every Supplement That Interacts With Phenylephrine
This page covers Algin only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Phenylephrine page lists 81 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.
The most serious there right now: Activated Charcoal (major), Ephedra (major), Lithium (major), Peyote (major) and Rauvolfia Vomitoria (major).
By severity: 6 major · 60 moderate · 15 minor.
From our pharmacist’s overview on the Phenylephrine page
“If you take phenylephrine (Sudafed PE, Biorphen) for congestion, treat this list as one that needs real attention, since six of its 81 entries carry a major rating. Phenylephrine tightens blood vessels to clear your nose, and more than half of the interactions here come from stimulant ingredients, ephedra above all, that can push blood…”

About Algin
What is Algin?
- Heartburn and acid reflux (in combination products)
- Lowering cholesterol
- Digestive health and feeling full
- Use as a thickener and binder in foods and medicines
- Weight management
Algin (alginate) is a fiber-like substance from brown seaweed that is widely used as a thickener, gel, and binder in foods and medicines. Its best-known medical use is in heartburn products, where it forms a barrier that helps reduce acid reflux; evidence for other uses like lowering cholesterol or weight loss is weaker. It is generally considered safe in food amounts, but check with your pharmacist before using it as a supplement, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
