Why this applies to Vincristine

Vincristine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Astaxanthin interacts with.

Theoretically, astaxanthin may decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that astaxanthin induces CYP3A4 enzyme activity in human hepatocytes. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the idea behind this one. Vincristine is cleared from your body largely by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In test tube studies, astaxanthin seems to speed that enzyme up, which could (in theory) clear vincristine faster and leave less of it working against the cancer. With a chemotherapy drug, you really want the dose your oncology team chose to do its job, so anything that might quietly lower its level is worth flagging.

The important part: this is only lab data and has never been shown to happen in actual people, so I wouldn't panic. But because vincristine is serious chemo, please don't add astaxanthin (or any supplement) without first clearing it with your oncologist or pharmacist.

What Is Vincristine Injection Used For?

Vincristine Sulfate Injection is approved to treat acute leukemia. It is also used as part of combination chemotherapy regimens for Hodgkin's disease, non-Hodgkin's malignant lymphomas, rhabdomyosarcoma (a soft-tissue cancer), neuroblastoma (a cancer of nerve tissue), and Wilms' tumor (a kidney cancer in children).

Because it works best alongside other cancer medicines, vincristine is almost always given as part of a multi-drug treatment plan rather than on its own.
