Ba Ji Tian + Bupropion
Bupropion brand names: Wellbutrin, Wellbutrin SR, Zyban, Wellbutrin XL, Aplenzin, and others.
We found no known interaction between Ba Ji Tian and Bupropion in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first.
Ba Ji Tian and Bupropion
We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.
No Known Interaction Found
We did not find a documented interaction between Bupropion and Ba Ji Tian in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.
If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.
Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Bupropion
Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Bupropion is filed under 6 classifications — including antidepressant drugs, cytochrome p450 2b6 (cyp2b6) substrates, cytochrome p450 2d6 (cyp2d6) inhibitors. Ba Ji Tian has documented interactions with 1 drug class — the most serious being antidiabetes drugs (moderate) — and none of Bupropion’s classifications are among them.
Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What Bupropion Is Prescribed For, and What Ba Ji Tian Has Been Studied For
These two come up together because they touch the same health topic — not because they do the same job. Bupropion is a prescription medicine with approved uses on its FDA label. Ba Ji Tian is a supplement: what follows is what researchers have looked at it for, and how strong that evidence is.
Bupropion is prescribed for: Bupropion is FDA-approved to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) — a form of clinical depression. Extended-release formulations (XL and hydrobromide versions, including Aplenzin) are also approved for the prevention of seasonal affective disorder (SAD), the pattern of depression that tends to arrive in autumn and winter. Not all formulations share every indication. Aplenzin (bupropion hydrobromide extended-release) and bupropion hydrochloride extended-release tablets (XL) are indicated for both MDD and SAD.

Bupropion hydrochloride extended-release tablets (SR) and bupropion hydrochloride immediate-release tablets are indicated for MDD only.

Ba Ji Tian for depression
A small meta-analysis in patients with moderate depressive disorder shows that taking oligosaccharides extracted from the root of ba ji tian at doses of 300-800 mg daily for 6-8 weeks reduces depressive symptom scores, as measured on the Hamilton Depression Scale 17-items, similarly to an antidepressant control.

Effectiveness ratings and the research summaries above are the verbatim record from the Natural Medicines database, which grades evidence from “Effective” down to “Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate”. A rating below the top of that scale means researchers have looked at it — not that it works, and never that it can stand in for a prescribed medicine. Do not stop or replace Bupropion on your own; if you are taking Ba Ji Tian for the same health topic, tell your prescriber, especially if the medicine is being adjusted to a target.
Questions About Ba Ji Tian or Bupropion
These are real questions from readers, answered by the pharmacists at HelloPharmacist — written by a person, not generated from a database. Each one covers Ba Ji Tian or Bupropion, not necessarily both, but if one is close to what you were about to ask it will usually go further than a database entry can:

See Every Supplement That Interacts With Bupropion
This page covers Ba Ji Tian only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Bupropion page lists 46 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.
The most serious there right now: Activated Charcoal (major), Adrafinil (moderate), African Wild Potato (moderate), Artichoke (moderate) and Astaxanthin (moderate).
By severity: 1 major · 33 moderate · 12 minor.
From our pharmacist’s overview on the Bupropion page
“Bupropion (Wellbutrin, Zyban) deserves genuine care around supplements, and the entry to understand first is activated charcoal, the only major-rated interaction on this list. Charcoal and similar bulk products can soak up the drug in the gut and blunt its effect, so space them well apart from your dose.”

- Low libido and erectile concerns
- Bone and joint health
- Fatigue and low vitality
- Low mood
Ba Ji Tian is a root used in Traditional Chinese Medicine, mostly to 'tonify the kidneys' and support energy, sexual function, and bone health. If you want to try it, talk with a pharmacist or doctor first, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Ba Ji Tian is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Ba Ji Tian record says about it on its own.
Ba Ji Tian: dosing
There is no well-established standardized dose for Ba Ji Tian. In Traditional Chinese Medicine it is often used as part of a multi-herb formula and prepared as a decoction, but specific amounts vary by practitioner and product. If you choose to use a commercial product, follow the directions on the label and do not exceed the recommended amount. A trained TCM practitioner, pharmacist, or doctor can help you decide whether it is appropriate for you and in what form.

Bupropion Is Linked to Lower Levels of One Nutrient
Natural Medicines records Bupropion as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Ba Ji Tian — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
