Ba Ji Tian and Semaglutide

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Semaglutide

Semaglutide falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Ba Ji Tian interacts with.

Animal research shows that taking ba ji tian extracts might increase or decrease blood glucose levels. Theoretically ba ji tian might have additive effects or attenuate the effects antidiabetes drugs. Monitor blood glucose levels closely; dose adjustments of antidiabetes drugs might be necessary. Some antidiabetes drugs include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase PresTab, Micronase), insulin, metformin (Glucophage), pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), and others.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the honest picture: this one is mostly theoretical. In animal studies, Ba Ji Tian has shifted blood sugar in both directions, sometimes lowering it and sometimes raising it. We don't have solid human data, so we can't predict exactly what it would do alongside your semaglutide.

Because semaglutide already works to bring your blood sugar down, the main thing to watch for is an added drop. Signs of low blood sugar include shakiness, sweating, dizziness, confusion, or feeling unusually hungry. On the flip side, if the herb nudges sugar upward, your semaglutide may not control things as well. If you're set on trying Ba Ji Tian, check your glucose more often at first and loop in your pharmacist or doctor before starting, so your dose can be adjusted if needed.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Semaglutide page

“Semaglutide (Ozempic, Rybelsus, Wegovy) lowers blood sugar, and so do most of the 256 supplements on this page, which is why I read this list with real vigilance rather than a shrug. Nearly all of the entries either add to its glucose-lowering effect and raise the risk of hypoglycemia, or push sugar the other way and blunt it, as niaci…”

About Semaglutide

What Is Semaglutide Used For?

Brand names: Ozempic, Rybelsus, Wegovy

Semaglutide is available as Wegovy (injection and tablet) and Ozempic (injection), and each product has its own approved uses. Wegovy injection is approved — alongside diet and exercise — to reduce excess body weight in adults and in children aged 12 and older with obesity, to lower the risk of serious heart events (heart attack, stroke, or cardiovascular death) in adults with obesity or overweight who also have established heart disease, and for treatment of a liver condition called MASH (metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis, formerly called NASH) with moderate-to-advanced scarring in adults. Wegovy tablets share the cardiovascular risk reduction and weight management uses in adults, but are not approved for MASH or for use in children. Ozempic injection is approved to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes (alongside diet and exercise) and to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events in adults with type 2 diabetes who also have established heart disease.

All forms are used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Ozempic is not approved for type 1 diabetes. The MASH approval for Wegovy injection is an accelerated approval, meaning continued approval may depend on results from a confirmatory study.
