Ba Ji Tian and Glucose

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Glucose

Glucose falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Ba Ji Tian interacts with.

Animal research shows that taking ba ji tian extracts might increase or decrease blood glucose levels. Theoretically ba ji tian might have additive effects or attenuate the effects antidiabetes drugs. Monitor blood glucose levels closely; dose adjustments of antidiabetes drugs might be necessary. Some antidiabetes drugs include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase PresTab, Micronase), insulin, metformin (Glucophage), pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), and others.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing with Ba Ji Tian and glucose: this combination is a little different from the usual medication mix-up. Glucose (the sugar your body runs on, including IV glucose given to raise low blood sugar) isn't broken down by a liver enzyme that Ba Ji Tian would block or speed up. Instead, the concern is simpler. In animal studies only, Ba Ji Tian extracts have shifted blood sugar up or down, so it could push against or alongside whatever you're using to manage your levels.

This is purely theoretical right now, so I wouldn't panic. But if you're taking Ba Ji Tian while managing blood sugar, keep an eye on your readings and loop in your pharmacist or doctor before making any changes.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Glucose page

“Glucose given by IV raises a dangerously low blood sugar, and this list warrants real caution because most of its 256 ingredients pull the other way. Nearly all of them lower blood sugar on their own, working against the treatment and setting up another crash.”
