Why this applies to Safinamide Mesylate

Safinamide Mesylate falls under MONOAMINE OXIDASE INHIBITORS (MAOIs) — the group Beer interacts with.

Concomitant use may cause hypertensive crisis.
Beer contains tyramine, which is metabolized by monoamine oxidase. Concurrent use of MAOIs with tyramine-containing beverages can lead to elevated levels of tyramine in the body. This can increase the effects of tyramine, which has been reported to cause hypertension, headache, and hypertensive crisis in numerous cases. Sensitivity to tyramine can increase up to 10-fold to 100-fold in people using an MAOI.

Here's the thing about Xadago (safinamide): it slows down an enzyme called MAO-B, which normally helps clear out certain compounds. One of those is tyramine, a natural substance found in beer (especially tap, craft, and unpasteurized brews). When that enzyme is blocked, tyramine can build up and push your blood pressure up sharply.

In a worst case, this could trigger a hypertensive crisis, with a pounding headache, neck stiffness, racing heart, or sudden very high blood pressure. Safinamide is more MAO-B selective than older MAOIs, so the risk is somewhat lower, and this caution is based mainly on how the drug works rather than lots of reported cases. Still, since it's potentially serious, please ask your pharmacist or doctor before drinking any beer while on Xadago.
