Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Barbiturates like butalbital, phenobarbital, and secobarbital are powerful nervous system relaxers. They already calm the brain, which is why they can leave you feeling drowsy, foggy, or slowed down. The concern here is simple addition: animal studies hint that berberine may carry its own mild sedative effect, so layering it on top of a barbiturate could deepen that sleepiness.

Honestly, this one is mostly theoretical and rests on lab and animal data, not solid human studies, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, with these particular drugs, even a little extra drowsiness, dizziness, or trouble concentrating matters, especially before driving. If you take both, just give your pharmacist or doctor a quick heads-up so they can keep an eye on how you feel.
