Biofeedback and Nafcillin Sodium

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

SEIZURE THRESHOLD LOWERING DRUGS

Why this applies to Nafcillin Sodium

Nafcillin Sodium falls under SEIZURE THRESHOLD LOWERING DRUGS — the group Biofeedback interacts with.

There is some concern that electroencephalogram (EEG) biofeedback might lower the seizure threshold in some patients. Theoretically, combining EEG biofeedback with seizure threshold-lowering drugs might increase the risk of seizure.
Some drugs that lower the seizure threshold include anesthetics (propofol, others), antiarrhythmics (mexiletine), antibiotics (amphotericin, penicillin, cephalosporins, imipenem), antidepressants (bupropion, others), antihistamines (cyproheptadine, others), immunosuppressants (cyclosporine), narcotics (fentanyl, others), stimulants (methylphenidate), theophylline, and others.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to know: nafcillin is a penicillin-type antibiotic, and at high doses penicillins can slightly lower the brain's seizure threshold, meaning they can make seizures a touch more likely in people who are already prone to them. EEG biofeedback, on its own, has also been linked in some reports to nudging that threshold down. So the concern is simply that stacking the two together might add up.

I want to be honest about how shaky this is. The evidence is mostly theoretical and the risk is low, especially for someone with no seizure history. Nafcillin doesn't need to be "activated," so this isn't about one changing the other's levels, it's about both gently tugging the same way. If you have a seizure disorder or take nafcillin at high IV doses, just mention the biofeedback to your doctor or pharmacist first.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
  • BCase-control study.
  • CConsensus.
  • DAnecdotal evidence.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Nafcillin Sodium page

“Nafcillin sodium (Unipen) is a penicillin antibiotic for serious staph infections, often given by IV, so anything that weakens it or piles strain on the kidneys carries real weight. Three of the 75 supplements on this page rate major, and those come first: Siberian cocklebur and asarabacca can each damage the kidneys, and activated cha…”

About Biofeedback

What is Biofeedback?

  • Chronic pain
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Anxiety and stress
  • High blood pressure
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Tension and muscle relaxation

Biofeedback is a mind-body technique, not an herb or supplement. It uses sensors to show you real-time information about body functions like heart rate, muscle tension, or skin temperature so you can learn to control them. It is generally very safe and has reasonable evidence for headaches, certain pain conditions, and pelvic floor problems, but it works best alongside standard medical care.
