Sodium Bicarbonate (OTC Drug) falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Black Psyllium interacts with.

Theoretically, psyllium might increase, decrease, or have no effect on the absorption of oral drugs.
Psyllium seems to have variable effects on drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take psyllium 30-60 minutes after oral medications. Animal research shows that blond psyllium delays and increases the absorption of metformin and ethinyl estradiol. Case reports and animal research suggest that blond psyllium might reduce absorption of lithium, digoxin, olanzapine, and carbamazepine. Finally, some pharmacokinetic studies show that psyllium does not affect the absorption of levothyroxine or warfarin. Although many of these studies evaluated blond psyllium, the fiber content in black psyllium may have similar effects.

Here's the simple version: that thick gel black psyllium forms in your gut can grab onto pills sitting nearby and slow or change how much your body absorbs. With sodium bicarbonate, this is mostly a theoretical concern, and any effect would be minor. Sodium bicarbonate isn't a prodrug, it works right where it lands, neutralizing stomach acid to ease heartburn or, when prescribed, lowering acid in your blood or urine.

The practical worry is that fiber could blunt the antacid's quick relief if you swallow them together. An easy fix: take your sodium bicarbonate first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before your psyllium. If you take it for a prescribed reason, check timing with your pharmacist.

Sodium bicarbonate treats several different types of discomfort depending on the product and how it is used. Taken by mouth, it relieves heartburn, sour stomach, acid indigestion, and upset stomach. EcoDent Ultimate Essential Mouthcare oral solution is used to temporarily clean minor mouth wounds and soothe minor gum inflammation from dental procedures, dentures, orthodontic appliances, or accidental injury.

Used on the skin, sodium bicarbonate products — including After Bite Kids cream, After Bite Advanced and After Bite X Tech liquids, Itch Eraser Sensitive cream, AHHH Bite Relief gel, Insect sting relief latex lotion, Insect sting relief pad, and Dermfree Insect Bite Relief liquid — temporarily relieve minor skin irritation and itching from insect bites, stings, and contact with poison ivy, oak, or sumac.
