Black Seed and Aspirin, Caffeine, Hydrocodone

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Black Seed interacts with whole categories of medication. Aspirin, Caffeine, Hydrocodone falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Black Seed in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

CNS DEPRESSANTS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Aspirin, Caffeine, Hydrocodone

Aspirin, Caffeine, Hydrocodone falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Black Seed interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use with drugs that have sedative properties may cause additive effects.
Animal research suggests that black seed may have CNS depressant effects.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

The medication you're asking about (Damason-P) contains hydrocodone, an opioid that can make you sleepy, slow your breathing, and cause dizziness. The concern here isn't about how your body breaks the drug down. Instead, it's that black seed may have its own mild calming, or sedative, effect based on animal studies. Stacked on top of hydrocodone, the two together could in theory add up and leave you more drowsy or foggy than expected.

I want to be honest about the strength of this: it comes only from lab and animal research, not from people, so it's largely theoretical. Food-amount black seed as a spice is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated supplement doses are less studied, so check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

2 of 2

Aspirin, Caffeine, Hydrocodone also falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS.

Theoretically, black seed may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
In vitro and animal research suggests that black seed extract can inhibit platelet aggregation and clotting, and increase bleeding time. In addition, decreased platelet counts have occurred in a human case report and in animal research.

The piece of this combo pill that matters here is the aspirin. Aspirin already thins your blood by making your platelets less sticky, which is why it can cause bruising, nosebleeds, or stomach irritation. Black seed appears to do something similar in lab and animal studies, slowing clotting and even lowering platelet counts in a few reports. Stacked together, they could in theory add up and raise your bleeding risk a bit.

I'll be honest: this is mostly theoretical and based on early research, not strong human studies. A sprinkle of black seed in cooking is unlikely to be an issue, but concentrated supplement doses are less predictable. Watch for unusual bruising, bleeding gums, or dark stools, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding a black seed supplement.

  • General inflammation

Black seed (Nigella sativa) is a traditional spice and remedy that has been studied for asthma, blood sugar, cholesterol, and blood pressure, with early research showing some promise but no firmly proven benefits. It is generally well tolerated in food amounts, but supplement-strength doses are less studied, so talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it—especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or take other medicines.
