Black Seed + Clomipramine
Clomipramine brand names: Anafranil, Anafranil SR.
Black Seed has a moderate interaction with Clomipramine. Theoretically, black seed might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Clomipramine
Clomipramine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Black Seed interacts with.
In vitro research suggests that thymoquinone, a constituent of black seed, can decrease the metabolism of phenytoin by a mechanism possibly related to the inhibition of CYP2C9. The effect of black seed on CYP2C9 is unclear. This has not been shown in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist if you're taking clomipramine (Anafranil) for OCD and thinking about black seed. The concern is that a compound in black seed, thymoquinone, might slow down a liver enzyme called CYP2C9, which helps clear some medicines. In theory, if that enzyme runs slower, clomipramine could build up a bit more in your system and lead to stronger effects, things like extra drowsiness, dry mouth, constipation, blurry vision, dizziness, or a faster heartbeat.
I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. This is purely a lab-and-theory idea, mostly based on phenytoin in a test tube, and it has not been shown in people. Food-amount seasoning is very unlikely to matter; concentrated supplements are less studied. Just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up before adding it.

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Clomipramine page
“A tricyclic antidepressant used mostly for OCD, clomipramine (Anafranil) is unforgiving of shifts in its blood level, which is why its 236 supplement interactions deserve genuine wariness. Most of the list involves metabolism: herbs that speed up or slow down the liver enzymes handling clomipramine can drag its level too low or push it…”

About Black Seed
What is Black Seed?
- Respiratory support (asthma, allergies, cough)

- General inflammation
Black seed (Nigella sativa) is a traditional spice and remedy that has been studied for asthma, blood sugar, cholesterol, and blood pressure, with early research showing some promise but no firmly proven benefits. It is generally well tolerated in food amounts, but supplement-strength doses are less studied, so talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it—especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or take other medicines.
